Neal Granville's coaching review 2012

Written by  Neal Granville on Tuesday, 20 December 2011

This is the time of year most of us take stock of things and reflect. What sort of a year have I had at work? Did I achieve the goals I set for the year? How many of my new year's resolutions have I stuck to? Have I reduced my handicap this year? I am sure these are all familiar thoughts for you at this time of year.

Well, this year I have done a review of my own coaching, or maybe, should I say, the performance of the people I have been coaching.

I have based my findings on people that have had more than one lesson. I have also reviewed their performance based on their handicap in 2011.

Here are my findings:

50% have improved their handicap.

38% have maintained the same handicap.

12% have increased their handicap.

On average, those players that have improved their handicap, have done so by an average of 1.5 shots.

On reflection, those figures are positive for me, although I am a strong believer that you can always improve further. I have thought about this quite a bit and made some notes on what I think about the results.

  • I am pleased that the largest percentage are all improvers, although I need to remember a lot of people who come to see me are not playing well, and their initial goal is to get back to playing to their handicap!
  • I cannot help everyone.
  • I have no control of what people do after a lesson; I can only advise!
  • I want to improve all of those figures.
  • Every lesson that I give, I learn something about my coaching.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their business this year, and choosing to come to me for coaching.

If you are part of the 50%, let's keep up the good work. If you are part of the 38%, lets keep working hard, as a breakthrough will not be far off. And if you are part of the 12%, and have done everything I have advised, then I apologise, and hope we get an opportunity to re-think, work at your game, and find the key to improving it.

I would certainly suggest everyone sits down at some point and have a quick golfing review.
