Everyone will know that this is a very tricky question, and one that can, and always will be debated by green staff pundits and members. However, cast your mind back two weekends ago, the 28th, 29th, and 30th April 2012. It was a wet one, wasn't it?

I was playing golf with my brothers at The Oxfordshire the other day; I was partnered with my brother Mick, and we were against my other brother Robin and his friend, who like Robin, also happened to be from Wales.

In summer 1999, I was a member of the Oxfordshire golf club, playing off a handicap of 18 and, as I had started playing golf late in life I hadn't been taking it very seriously. I was still heavily involved in the running of Autotrader with my mind on many different things.

Just a few weeks ago my wife Jennifer and I invited our niece Chloe, her husband Steve and their two young daughters Lilly and Poppy to be our guests on a skiing holiday to Klosters in Switzerland.

Recently I spoke to an associate of mine who mentioned that he hadn’t ever been a member of a golf club.

 

His reasoning behind this was that there are supposedly cheap green fees available if you keep your options open.

 

He asked ‘why tie yourself down to one club?’
