Superficially these golf balls really stand out for me. That may be a strange thing to say about a golf ball but Callaway's trademark HEX aerodynamic design and softness feel so much nicer than any other ball.
In a blind rummage around a bag of golf balls I will always come up with a Callaway purely because of their look and feel. The new Warbird Plus balls are no different and best of all they are very durable. The quality of a Callaway ball means you only need to change up after a few rounds or if you put it in the lake.
The real advance with the latest Warbird is the new high-powered rubber core which really makes the ball fly. This two piece construction is tougher yet softer than any previous Warbird, providing the distance benefits of a low compression ball with better playability. The durable rubber core maximises the energy transfer through compress and really springs of the club face.
The surrounding ionomer cover has also been given a facelift, becoming the newest addition to the Callaway HEX family. The Hexagonal (HEX) design of the ionomer cover removes traditional dimpling, providing complete cover of the outer shell and removing the old seems for a more consistent, penetrating ball flight.
This unique aerodynamic design really makes a difference, increasing the Warbird's workability and performance in wet, windy winter conditions. In fact this is where the Warbird Plus really comes into its own - being able to slice through treacherous winds and even run a mile when it's wet under foot.
The slight drawback is that although the Warbird Plus feels great off the driver and will carry huge distances, it doesn't provide much feedback or finesse on the greens during the summer. The Warbird feels heavy off the putter face and simply wants to run long which you don't want on fast greens.
This Warbird Plus is perfect during the winter when you need your drives to carry through high winds and will usually hold well on soft winter greens. All in all I like this ball and would play it in any conditions, but some people have found it too hard so try it out and decide for yourself.
What the Web is Saying
"Personally I like them and use them when it's windy or wet (but only pay £12 a dozen online). I have stopped using them in the summer as they just seem to roll forever, which is nice on a drive - but a nightmare when pitching." - golfmagic.com
"Ed thought the Warbird Plus felt a bit "bricklike" when he teed it up but was pleasantly surprised with how good it felt off the face. He also noted good control with what was one of the better balls in the category. David was less impressed and felt the ball was quite hard to get decent distance with." - todaysgolfer.co.uk
