It's remarkable to think what a pair of golf shoes has to endure in its lifetime. With the average golfer walking around five miles per round through woods, bushes, bunkers and heath they also have to contend with the 150 days of rain the UK climate throws at us and still be delicate enough to romp around the greens.
FootJoy have managed to master all of these conditions by creating a waterproof yet breathable pair of golfing shoes. The FootJoy Icons act as a replacement for the highly popular and great looking 'Classic' series but incorporate all the features of the indestructible DryJoys. Could this be a match made in heaven?
The simple answer is, without a doubt, yes. The Icons look great and come in ten varieties of styles which range from classic white 'bobble' leather and 'matt' black right the way through to sporty styles, asymmetrical designs and even a 'boa' snake skin variation. These classic looks never go out of fashion and there's even more choice at the MyJoy Custom Shop. Here you can choose from millions of variations to produce your own custom look with personal monogram.
Unlike the 'Classic' series which took a few rounds to mould to your feet the Icons feel great and fit snuggly straight out of the box. Your foot is surrounded by a memory foam insert, around the tongue and collar, and sandwiched between an ultra-soft 'duel density foot bed'. Having a wider foot I often get a few abrasions in new shoes but these FootJoys are some of the best I've tried with a solid rounded toe that provides a little more room.
The inside leather lining provides support along with a little flex and breathability throughout the round. This is coupled with the full grain leather exterior which ensures the Icons are waterproof guaranteed for up to a year, but if well maintained they should last for a few seasons.
As well as providing protection and comfort the Icons also incorporate very clever stability technology to provide you with superior 'mid foot stability'. A perforated alloy graphite bar insert runs along the arch of the foot giving you added support and flex throughout your swing.
With more than two thirds of professionals lacing up with FootJoy there is no better vindication for a brand. This year will see the like of Luke Donald and Ian Poulter sporting some stylish new Icons. They are a fitting replacement for my old 'Classics' bringing together the latest innovation in shoe design, durability and classic looks. Despite the rather hefty price I would recommend these shoes to anyone serious about golf as the fine quality means they will last well into the future.
