Review: Palm Grove Golf Waterproof Suit

Written by  James Cornish on Wednesday, 21 September 2011
In Britain and Ireland, rain really is par for the course and waterproofs make it possible to play in the rain effectively and comfortably. We review the Palm Grove Golf Waterproof Suit here.

Not so long ago, many people's ideas of golfing waterproofs were an umbrella and a quick dash for the clubhouse. Cumbersome jackets would ruin even the finest swing, but as the development of new materials has continued apace, lightweight waterproofs that keep your whole body dry and don't impede your game have spread rapidly.

For many, the major factor that prevents them from investing in waterproofs is the cost. Some of the more stylish, better branded outfits can set you back a tidy sum, and it is questionable whether it is worth the investment for someone who restricts their play to the summer months.

But the lack of a good set of waterproofs, especially in the UK and Ireland, can stunt the development of your game if the advances made between May and September are undone by a lack of practice during for the rest of the year. And that is where Palm Grove's fantastically priced waterproofs come in.

At such an affordable price, even the occasional golfer can happily make the purchase and be ready for year-round golf.

It is not just about price though. The material used is incredibly spacious and lightweight, minimising the negative impact on your game, and it really does keep the rain out. It is an indictment on the summer just gone that we had ample opportunity to test this suit, but we were encouraged by the results.

Both the jacket and the trousers are well designed, with a soft collar and drawstrings on the jacket's hem as well as on the trouser waistband. The waistband is also elasticated, as are the inner ankle (backed up by zip fasteners) and the jacket cuffs, which also have Velcro flaps. The trousers have a zip fly and three pockets, while the jacket has two.

We are big fans of this product but the one area where it was let down was in breathability. This is 100% polyester, not Gortex, and as a result it is less comfortable to wear over the duration of a round. If you are a serious golfer who will be out on the course every weekend, rain or shine, you might think paying the extra money is worth it, but the Palm Grove Waterproof Suit remains a superb choice.
