Review: Under Armour Coldgear Long Sleeve Mock

Written by  David Colyer on Wednesday, 22 June 2011
Staying warm and dry while you play a round of golf is imperative if you want to keep the concentration level up and the score down. A good base layer is vital to achieving this. Here we review the Under Armour Coldgear Long Sleeve Mock.

Under Armour has quite a name for itself, with their range of sporting garments now used by a number of professional football and rugby teams.

The Under Armour Coldgear Long Sleeve Mock features:

  • Rapid moisture transport and core temperature regulation
  • Two layer fabric combines enhanced thermal protection
  • Compression fitted to protect muscles
  • 66% nylon / 19% polyester / 15% elastene

The Coldgear range is aimed for use in weather conditions of 13 degrees and below, and it really does work to keep you warm. The Leaderboard team has been using them since the beginning of the year, and not just to play golf in.

Trapping warmth by allowing body heat to circulate, while also working to wick excess moisture away form the body, these base layers are tried and tested and come up trumps.

The tight fitting, or compression fit, long sleeve t-shirt works to protect your muscles and in so doing helping to eliminate fatigue over time. The support provided by this shirt really does allow you to practice and play for longer, and helps muscles to recover so you are not as sore the following day.

This is not however a golf specific garment and an Under Armour Stability Shirt may be a better option if you are looking for a compression shirt that is going to provide support around the lower back and the other muscles groups key to golf.

Where this shirt excels is in its lightweight nature and warmth provided. A cotton t-shirt, unable to breath, soon gets wet with sweat even on those colder days, as hot air is unable to escape through the layers. When you stop, for example once you have made it to the next tee and are lining up to take your shot, the wet cotton cools and you get cold. The fabric blend of this base layer prevents this moisture build up, maintaining your body temperature.

Even If you are a fair weather golfer who has no intention of playing a round in under 13 degrees temperatures, the Under Armour Coldgear Long Sleeve Mock is great item to have in your wardrobe. They are cheaper than their golf specific counterparts and are perfect if you are on the move during winter and need warmth without wetness.
