Review: Callaway Golf Big Bertha Diablo Tour Driver

Written by  Sam Reynolds on Tuesday, 28 June 2011

If a driver has a name like Big Bertha, then you know it must mean serious business. Named after the infamous German howitzer from World War One, this driver promises power and accuracy. Its striking red design also suggests attitude, but appearances aside, does it live up to its name? We review the Callaway Golf Big Bertha Diablo Tour driver.

You need to be able to achieve great distances when playing long games, and as is expected from any decent golfer, you need to be able to perform these strokes with great accuracy and speed. With this in mind, the Big Bertha Diablo Tour Driver really delivers on its promise and it is all thanks to the technology behind it.

The Big Bertha utilises Callaway's Hyperbolic Face Technology, which gives it a much larger sweet spot. This offers a healthy dose of forgiveness and greatly increases the chance of connecting dead on, making it much harder to slice the ball.

Added to this you will also benefit from its Edge Technology, which distributes weight in the club head in such a way that it grants the club face an optimal centre of gravity.

It all combines together in a winning formula that means you can swing as aggressively as you want from the outset and the club face will afford you the accuracy needed to make your ball fly far and true. You can really shape your shots while achieving consistently high distances.

The Big Bertha is aimed primarily at those with a lower handicap but should prove to be a valuable addition to anyone's collection. Less experienced players can make good use of its forgiveness and accuracy to achieve those long shots without having to worry so much about mishits and it will prove to be a fun club to practise with.

Those more experienced will find it to be a great tool for optimising their own performance and eliminate any tendencies to miss their mark. The club face will ensure they nail that long shot to the fairway.

The Big Bertha achieves everything that is required from a driver and it does so with flying colours. While suitable for play from any lie, its true power is best realised when teeing off. If there is a criticism to be made, some may find the grip to be insufficient but after a bit of practise you should soon become accustomed to it.
