Review: Callaway RAZR Hawk Tour Driver

Written by  Sam Reynolds on Wednesday, 29 June 2011

Many golfers are happy to simply send the ball as far as it will go when teeing off, which isn't a bad strategy, but if you are from the school of players who like to shape their initial shots as well then the Callaway RAZR Hawk Tour Driver may be just the club you are looking for.

Pick up the club and you will see that the head is rather light but this is far from a weakness. The Tour Driver is made from Callaway's trademark Forged Composite which results in a lightweight but very strong club head.

There are two versions of the club and the weight has been distributed appropriately. In the neutral version the rear of the club is more weighted, lowering the centre of gravity and resulting in more height, whereas the draw version has the weight placed more to the side, which allows more workability, as the name suggests.

The club head has also been designed with a more aerodynamic shape that greatly reduces drag. This allows you to swing with more speed and minimal resistance, which really helps your strike go the extra mile.

The density and shape of the club head really allows you to achieve maximum speed and distance, which makes that all-important first stroke really count, but it is also suitable for play on other lies and offers an excellent amount of versatility throughout your game.

Added to this is the way the club face offers forgiveness without sacrificing distance so you won't find mishits to be too much a hindrance. The Tour Driver plays consistently straight but also gives you some room to draw your shots to an extent, although it requires some effort. In fact, although draw is possible it does not always feel as easy to pull off as it is with other models.

There is a nice solid feel on impact although a minor complaint is the fact that good and bad shots feel identical so it isn't always so easy to tell how well you are playing. Nevertheless, this is an excellent driver that shows off an above-average performance, particularly in terms of distance and accuracy.

What the Web is Saying

"Delivers very good performance with above average distance...Consistent, straight shots are the norm; subtle draws and fades occur with some effort; very good trajectory control." - golf.com

"Callaway's RAZR Hawk Tour is everything a driver should be. It's a solid feeling, mid-ish launch bomb dropper with a relatively small footprint. This is a driver that is every bit as good as the early hype promised it would be!" - golfwrx.com
