Review: Cobra Long Tom Driver

Written by  Neal Granville on Monday, 16 January 2012

Named after a piece of heavy artillery designed in the 1930s and described by Cobra as the ultimate weapon for jaw-dropping distance, we review the Cobra Long Tom Driver.

The Cobra Long Tom Driver is certainly eye-catching with a length of 4 feet, giving it the highest length to weight ratio of all their drivers. This may sound cumbersome to smaller golfers out there but it is all part of the design to help increase swing speed and distance. Many find that a degree of accuracy is lost with a longer shaft due to the extra weight but the Long Tom proves easy to use thanks to its overall lightness, as well as the weight distribution in the head.

A short grip makes the club less unwieldy as well, so you can really take advantage of that extra length. This also reduces the weight of the grip, which allows more freedom with redistribution in the head, where every gram really counts.

Cobra have once more put their E9 Face Technology to good use, providing a 30% larger sweet spot for straighter shots. The titanium face is slightly curved with a new bulge and roll design which, when coupled with its very low centre of gravity, produces a very high launch with a low spin, resulting in trajectory that will be see the balls fly long and true.

Cobra have done a great job at giving a longer club high workability. Distance is notably increased but the design ensures that no accuracy is lost, offering the best of both worlds. If there is a criticism, it's that the club is not particularly forgiving. While accuracy is retained, wider shots will be harder to save so it is better suited to those with a lower handicap. But this is a minor issue, treat the club as a game enhancer rather than improver and you will be onto a winner straight from the tee.

What the Web is Saying

"I gained probably 20 yards and without the need to force it, and it really didn't compromise accuracy."  - golf-monthly.co.uk

"With other longer than standard drivers you felt like you were swinging a fishing rod, but somehow with this even longer one we did not feel that." - golfalot.com

"The drivers allow a player to develop a keen sense of clubhead feel. Releasing the club properly produces a very satisfying feel at impact." - golfweek.com
