Review: Mizuno JPX800 Driver

Written by  James Cornish on Friday, 15 July 2011

In many ways, the most important shot to a the low-level golfer's handicap is the drive. It builds confidence and provides a foundation for players to develop their game. We review the Mizuno JPX800 Driver, designed to help high handicappers but also appeal to better players not looking to spend a fortune.

Mizuno takes its research and development incredibly seriously, reflected in the rest of the JPX800 range, and when designing the JPX800 they compiled data on how distance was lost in drives.

What they found is that the principle reason drives lost distance is when the ball is hit either too high or low on the club face - so they created a club that improves performance away from the centre of the sweet spot.

In the process they have created a fantastic club that high handicappers can have immediate results with and one that will also serve them well as their games progress.

The key is stability. The JPX800's 460cc club head has a very high MOI - meaning that it resists twisting on impact with the ball and makes for greater consistency from swing to swing. Added to that is the club's huge sweet spot. The centre of gravity is low down the face, encouraging a high trajectory, and the ball eats up more yards than you would expect from a purely beginner's club.

The JPX800 is square at address, with internal weighting replicating the work of the offset common in many beginners' drivers. This helps combat hook shots very well and also makes it a viable club for better players. The mix of forgiveness, stability, length and the square address makes this a club mid-level golfers should also be enthused about too.

What the Web is Saying

"The greatest part about the Mizuno JPX-800 Driver is that it is not only built for forgiveness, which is perfect for the average or below average golfer, but it is also built in a way to allow you to shape your shots. This means even the more skilled golfers can benefit from this type of a driver off the tee instead of those drivers that are aimed for one type of golfer only." - bestgolfdriversreview.net

"Visually the Mizuno JPX-800 is a big improvement on the MX drivers and the sound has been improved. It produces impressive distance, which doesn?t drop off massively on shots that miss the middle." - golf-monthly.co.uk

"The Mizuno JPX-800 driver could be a keeper and if you're in the market for a new driver, it deserves at least a look." - golf-equipment-reviews.com
