Leaderboard's resident pro Graham is a real advocate of the Ping G20 Irons and although the G15's replacement driver may have some new tricks, it fundamentally follows the same formula to aid aspiring mid-handicap golfers. Despite the G20's high flying, low spinning set up, it has quickly been adopted by some of the tours big hitters like Bubba Watson, Angel Cabrera, and Miguel Angel Jimenez, which gives the G20 real appeal across the board.
The shape and design of the G20 is focused to get the most out of the tour restricted 460cc head, the maximum capacity allowed by golf's governing body. Each manufacturer must therefore deploy their own versions and patented technologies to get these monsters swinging faster and driving further.
The Ping G20 achieves this through a rather unusual but effective aerodynamic design which lends to its good looks. The club itself is able to cut through the air that builds up on the massive face, accelerating faster than was previously possible. The undercuts running along the heel and toe make this a reality, delivering faster swing speeds and greater launch velocities.
This is coupled with an ultra-thin, low density titanium (Ti 8-1-1) alloy construction with an extreme strength to weight ratio that reduces weight and creates a hot, high tensile club face. The variable thickness face also produces a large forgiving impact zone with weight being redistributed to the heel and toe for added stability and greater MOI.
Not only does the G20 hit long and true but the external weighting system, which is flanked by the aerodynamic cuts, on the bottom of the club produces a deep, low centre of gravity for high penetrating ball flights. The G20's refined design promotes all of the flight and forgiveness characteristics desired by the vast majority of players.
The specially designed lightweight TFC 169D graphite shafts complement the G20's head beautifully, promoting greater speed and a higher launch. I love the feel of the G20 as you can really accelerate through the swing to generate a satisfying wrist release and a sweet feeling contact.
The Ping G20 Driver has been creating a mighty buzz around the golfing community, and rightly so. Their newest G series offering really does live up to the hype and is a welcome addition to any bag.
