Comp stands for composite, which is the lightweight material that the top of the driver, or the crown, is made from. This helps concentrate weight, and therefore the centre of gravity, lower down the club face, helping to achieve a higher launch, and a more penetrative trajectory.
You might find this feature on a club aimed at mid to low level players, and while we would not prescribe this club for high handicappers, it is certainly one that players who are looking to kick on into low teens and single figures should seriously consider.
The 909D Comp Driver is made more accessible through increased stability and forgiveness. The specially designed Matrix Ozik shaft used on the club is very stiff, so the club head does not twist mid-swing while the massive 460cc head counteracts twisting and makes it a more forgiving club than you might expect from Titleist.
In practice, we liked what we saw. Our drives were consistently long and straight – and really, what else does the mid-level golfer want than confidence and consistency off the tee box?
We were especially happy with the performance of the Titleist 909D Comp Driver when we didn't middle the ball. Sure, it did not go as long or straight as if it had come of the middle of the sweet spot, but the ball held its line very well and managed to eat up an encouraging amount of ground.
We have to admit to being suckers for the classic lines that Titleist regularly employ, especially in their beautiful irons, and one area that the 909D Comp did let itself down was in its dimensions and general appearance.
It is a very large club, and while that contributes to forgiveness, stability, and a better flight, it takes some getting used to. It is by no means the best Titleist club to look at and its size made it feel a little cumbersome, though we are certain that would pass, and must reiterate that we were impressed with its performance.
In terms of set up, the club is very much a classic Titleist. It is straight and true at address, with no offset, very much like the clubs aimed at top golfers, yet it is very much a driver that mid-level golfers, as well as their more advanced counterparts, can call on with confidence when on the tee.
What the Web is Saying
"The 909D Comp is clearly a very good club...The face is half a degree open which suggests it's designed for the better player but, with the right shaft, I'm certain a 10-15 handicapper could learn to love it." - golfmagic.com
"Golfers who use this club say that you can feel the quality with every swing. The 909 D Comp is designed for the mid-handicap golfer who wants to dramatically improve the distance on his or her drives. Some golfers boast that the 909 D Comp has added an average of 25 additional yards to their drives. That's an amazing improvement, and one that can send golfers' scores plummeting." - liveforgolf.com
