Review: Yonex Golf Ezone Driver

Written by  Neal Granville on Friday, 05 August 2011

It always seems Japan is several steps ahead with technology and Yonex is no exception, producing some of the most advanced sporting equipment. We review their new Yonex Golf Ezone Driver.

The Ezone Driver comes in three different sizes, 380cc, 420cc, and 450cc, to suit players of varying skill levels. The general rule is that the bigger you go the more forgiveness you'll receive, so finding one to suit your game will be fairly straightforward.

Although the shape of the club heads vary slightly, they have all been designed with particularly deep faces. The weighting has been carefully distributed so that the centre of gravity is positioned right in the centre of the face, giving it a much larger sweet spot that will be difficult to miss. The club has a satisfying feel to it and even the larger head manages to avoid any hollow feelings on impact. Whichever one you choose, you will be rewarded with a good, solid drive that makes you feel more in control of the ball when the face connects.

Which size you choose will depend on what you are looking for in a driver. The 450 model is the most forgiving of the three and is most suitable for those with higher handicaps. It gives your shots a much higher launch but not at the expense of distance, so if you are looking to power straight ahead, this is probably the one for you.

The 420 offers the best of both worlds. While not being quite as forgiving, it still carries this quality but will also appeal to the more competitive player who requires a bit of room for workability. This head has the best feel of the three and is perfect for those wishing to improve the shaping of their shots.

Finally, the 380 is aimed at the more seasoned player and is the most versatile of the designs for those competent enough to use it. While less forgiving, it is perfect for really refining your game to the point of giving a tour level performance, but its design is not for everyone and if you aren't playing at an advanced level, it is best to seek a more forgiving club. It is easy to strike with but if you suffer a mishit, you'll certainly know about it. However in the right hands, the 380 can hit longer than the other two designs.

Yonex have excelled themselves with the Ezone Driver and the fact that they have catered to different abilities means that players of all skill levels should be able to find a variation that suits them to a tee.

What the Web is Saying

"Tour-sensation Ryo Ishikawa was instrumental in designing this new product, and if you're a confident driver of the ball you won't be put off by the compact head." - todaysgolfer.co.uk

"The 450 is one forgiving driver, the 420 excels as well. It feels like there is a good amount of mass or a very stable and solid structure behind the heel and toe that kept the ball on target." - golftoimpress.com

"The head shape and finish is a winner here" - golf-monthly.co.uk
