Review: Yonex VMX Driver

Written by  Tim Pettifer on Saturday, 13 August 2011

Yonex may not be one of the biggest names in golf, but they certainly have a reputation for their extremely technologically advanced equipment. They made waves back in 2007 with their Nanospeed I Driver, and again with their VMX range in 2009. We review their Yonex VMX driver here.

The first thing you notice about the driver is the unusual head shape - which is Yonex's unique 'aero-pentagon' design, engineered to reduce air resistance to make the club as aerodynamic as possible, as well as giving increased stability for long, straight drives.

It certainly feels like an extremely solid, advanced driver, and it inspires a huge amount of confidence as you're lining up on the tee. The head design really works to get the ball up in the air incredibly easily, which allows for a really impressive amount of distance - even when you don't hit the ball dead-on.

As we have come to expect form Yonex, there is a lot of technology packed into this driver. V-Slot technology helps to bring the centre of gravity lower, which works with the head shape to yield greater distance off the tee. A tungsten weight also works to this end, and also helps to ensure that the face is square upon impact.

Yonex are also very well known for their shafts, and the VMX driver features their HS6000 carbon graphite shaft which incorporates Hi-Stability technology.

In practice we could definitely tell that Yonex had put a lot of technical know-how into this driver, and it really delivered on the course. Our drives were consistently long with a fantastic high ball trajectory, and dead straight too.

It's aimed at higher handicappers, which made sense to us - we could really see this club as an excellent first choice for beginners to the game who need a driver which will help them to feel at ease and confident straight off the tee.

It may be a few years old now, but Yonex's VMX driver can still certainly compete with many current models on the market today. Being a couple of years old means that you can pick one up for a very good price - another reason why less experienced players should certainly take a look at this club if they're on the hunt for a driver that can help them improve their game.
