First of all, TaylorMade have made the head slightly larger with a 460cc capacity, which is the optimum legal limit for any driver club head size. Also in the Flight Control Technology here on the hosel, where you can remove the head and actually change the ball flight to higher, standard or lower, that's now done in one and a half degree increments - before it was just one degree. So there's a much broader scale there to change your ball flight.
At the base of the club, as before on the R11, you'll see that we've got Sole Plate Technology. That enables us to change the club face angle from plus or minus three degrees. So before, it was only available in the neutral, open or closed option, we now have new settings: open and open plus, and closed and closed plus. This takes it all the way to three degrees closed, or three degrees open.
As before on the R11, and previous models that TaylorMade have produced, you'll see that you've got the Moveable Weight Technology on the heel and on the toe of the club, so two different weights, again enabling the player to hang the ball flight characteristics and the centre of gravity.
On the very top of the golf club, it's made with a thick crown design which lowers the centre of gravity giving a nice high launch angle.
Again, something that's been around for a long time in TaylorMade products is the Inverted Cone Technology in the club face, so that when you hit off centre you still get a nice powerful shot.
As before with the R11 introduced in 2011, it comes with the lovely white finish. So a white crown, with the black face. This makes alignment really easy when the club's down to the ground, and it also stops any glare.
I'm going to head off to the driving range now, play about with the options for ball flight, hit a few shots, and come back and tell you what I think.
Well I have to say I enjoyed the predecessor, the standard R11, but this model gives a lot more versatility: you can really play about with the direction and the flight control options, and for me it was a much nicer feel too. Possibly slightly more forgiving as well with the 460cc head.
I also really enjoyed the Rip Aldila Phenom shaft they've added. 60 grams as standard, and for me that felt lovely.
So as soon as it's available on the market get out and have a go - I think you're all going to really enjoy this, especially those guys that really like to fine tune their ball flight. A great addition to the predecessor: the R11S.
