Video Review: Yonex E Zone Driver

Written by  Graham Green on Saturday, 09 July 2011
Graham Green, General Manager at the Leaderboard Golf Centre in Reading, reviews the exceptional new Yonex E Zone Driver.

This driver is made with fantastic quality titanium: precision cast titanium for the main body of the golf club head, with a titanium insert for the face.

Also, on the crown of the club to produce lower spin rate on the golf ball, it's made with a carbon composite material.

When we talk about Yonex - all Yonex clubs for that matter - we're really talking about the quality of their composite carbon material. You'll find that with their standard MP50EX shaft, made with the nanopreme material, incredible elasticity is delivered to the ball. But, with the carbon structure at the base with the titanium, it gives maximum stability.

So, with that elastic material, you're going to produce really fast club head speed to the ball. But the key thing with all Yonex shafts is the stability that it delivers with that extra speed - so you get the longest, but straightest, drives.

Now, there are a lot of players out there who wouldn't really want this shaft. So what Yonex have done, which I think is a brilliant move in their custom fit section, is release these Rexis shafts.

There's a red version with a slightly lower kick point for a higher launch angle, and the blue shaft with a slightly higher kick point for a lower trajectory.

These shafts are for players that really want to fine tune their launch angle and ball trajectory. We can do that with the use of our FlightScope radar here at the golf centre, so we can give you the perfect launch, perfect spin, and ultimately the best grouping with your drives.

I actually custom fitted myself last week, and I opted for the blue Rexis shaft with the T55 option and with the 450cc head with a 9 degree loft. Absolutely fantastic!

I'm just going to hit a shot now so you guys can see how well this suits my game and the launch angle it provides.

So there you have it: just what I'm looking for. The right trajectory, nice spin rate - I know that because I've been on the FlightScope radar, and that's perfect for me.

We're all different, so as I've said I've got the 9 degree head in the 450cc head size. That gives me a slightly higher launch angle but still with nice low spin. I would say probably 95% of the golfers that we see will fit into this head as it's probably got the most forgiveness out of all the head options that Yonex offer.

The other one that we'll probably sell a few of would be the 420cc head option. I would say that's going to be for a real elite market as it's a much lower ball flight and much lower spin rate - really, it's for those elite players that really give the ball a hit. I would say probably players that are swinging their driver 110-115mph, that need to keep the ball flight lower.

The other thing with the 420cc head is that you will be able to work the ball a bit more - I guess good players like to do that, and it will give you a little bit more feel.

So, both are really good heads, and there will be one that will fit your game.

When we talk about probably the biggest selling feature of this driver, it's something as simple as the centre of gravity. Yonex have gone and done something that I think is really simple: they've put the centre of gravity exactly back into the centre of the club face.

Now most titanium drivers you'll find on the market will have the centre of gravity higher than the centre of the actual club face. If you think about the centre of gravity and the sweet spot being where you want to hit the ball, why would you want to hit the ball higher up the club head? Why not in the centre?

So put the sweet spot back there, and that's going to give you more hitting surface and a bigger sweet spot of which to get your best drives.

As we've said before in our Yonex reviews, absolutely amazing technology. I would say they're always frontrunners when it comes to using different materials and going out there with their research and development team.

For me, pound for pound, it's the best product on the market. You can see I've gone out and got myself fitted, so why don't you guys come down and see which one is best for you?
