Let's start with the main core ingredients of this golf club. It's something that was developed in Japan, and it's the core centre of gravity technology.
What that means in real terms is that Yonex have actually placed the centre of gravity and the sweet spot exactly in the centre of the club face. Most drivers that you'll see will have the centre of gravity and the sweet spot much higher and towards the heel, but Yonex have positioned that exactly in the centre here. They've also been able to micro-adjust that position, and in doing so, they've been able to make the sweet spot slightly larger, and cover more surface area on the club face.
For us all, when we're playing the game, if we've got all that technology it's going to give us a straighter and more powerful drive.
Let's move on now to the crown, which is made from a carbon material. This makes the club head much lighter at the top, which reduces the spin rate. If we reduce the spin rate and we don't increase the launch angle, it's not a desirable effect - we must have a low spin rate and high launch angle. So what Yonex have included is an inner weight system, which lowers and deepens the centre of gravity which means we can get nice high launch angles, but with that low spin to maximise our distance.
With all Yonex products, one of the key factors is their shaft technology. Again here in the SD driver, we see it with the Nanospeed 200 graphite shaft, with its elastic titanium strand in the tip here, making it really elastic when you hit the ball. It's got what they call a kickback factor: it really powers into the ball giving you greater distance. But the key thing to note with the technology in all Yonex shafts is that you do not sacrifice the control for accuracy with the added kickback power that the shaft will give.
So it all sounds really juicy; I'm going to go to the driving range, whack a few shots, and come back and tell you guys exactly what I think.
If you fade or slice it, then this is the club for you - draw, draw, and more draw!
That was really great. I've got to say - it's a really enjoyable piece of kit. One of the things I liked most of all was that when you put it down, it looks good.
It's a little bit closed in, and for some good players that may put you off a bit, but for most of us out there - the single and teen players up to handicappers in the 20s - this golf club really does help to keep the ball straight.
The draw bias head lie really helps to keep the ball flight going straight. For a lot of people who fade or slice, this could be a really good choice. I had a go with the 12ยบ demo model, which was a little bit high for me, but it's just so easy to keep the ball straight. It fact, I was hitting a nice high draw with just about every shot. I had a mess about trying to hit a few fades, which I did achieve quite comfortably, so there's a little bit of versatility still in the club.
One of the things I do like about it when you put it down to the ground is that it has got a really nice, classic look about it. A lot of golf clubs with a great deal of technology quite often compromise on looks, but definitely not here. You've got the technology, and a really good look when you address the ball.
One thing I didn't mention earlier was the actual face, and the Variable Face Thickness that has been included. So when you do hit it slightly off-centre, because it's got 3.5mm thickness in the centre and about 2.8mm around the edge, you don't lose a great deal of distance, which is really important for most of us. We're not always going to find the centre of gravity, and when we don't, we want to make sure that our drives are still long. So I think that side of it is really interesting too.
Forgiving, long, and great for mid- to high teens and 20s handicappers plus - this would be a really good choice. I would recommend coming down to the Leaderboard Golf Centre in Reading and having a bash with it to see how you go.
What The Web is Saying
"One of the highest launching on the market compared to others with the same loft. The forgiveness was impressive, with strikes slightly high and low off the face still flying nicely." - golf-monthly.co.uk
"Handsome-looking driver. A dependable stick that has above average forgiveness capabilities." - golf.com
