I would even suggest, for most amateurs out there, considering moving that down into the mid irons such as the five and six irons. Now the hybrids are available in different lofts, we can really contemplate not just removing the long irons, but also those top end mid irons too.
Let's talk about the Yonex Ezone SD technology. First of all, the head construction: the face and the main body are made from a precision casting, stainless steel material, but that's backed up by the crown technology, which is Yonex carbon fibre graphite. This keeps a really low spin rate on the golf ball. To maximise the launch angle for that low spin rate, Yonex have included the inner weight pocket at the back of the golf club, giving us the optimum launch angle for each hybrid that we hit.
The great thing about hybrids is not only that they are easier to use than long irons, but they're actually more versatile too. It can be used from the tee, the rough, the fairway, and in fact you'll even see a lot of people using it as a chipper around the green.
In terms of what's available in loft specification, you can get it in a number three, which is a 19º loft, a number four, which I have here, in a 22º loft, the five is a 25º loft, and also a six hybrid which is a 28º loft.
Any of you out there that struggle with your five or six iron - as a lot of people do - it's well worth considering having a go with a hybrid to see if your game can become more consistent. Certainly for those players who don't create a massive amount of club head speed, it can be a much better choice because you can get a much hugger launch and more carry with a hybrid than you can with a mid iron.
The other aspect which marries up beautifully with the head construction is the Yonex Nanospeed 200 graphite shaft, made with its elastomer tip section which gives that lovely kickback into the ball. This increases your distance, but the main thing is that it doesn't sacrifice your direction. So maximum kick into the ball, but also maintaining the stability for accuracy down the fairways.
I'm going to go to the driving range and have a play about with this number four hybrid and come back to tell you exactly what I think of it.
It's like taking candy from a baby - so easy, it's unbelievable.
For me, this is one of my most favourite products. I think I'd even go as far as to say that it's my favourite hybrid that I've had a go with this year. It sits really well; it's so easy to hit, it flies a mile all the way through the air - so anyone wanting good distance to land it on the green, this is a great product choice. It's just packed with power, and that's what I like about it.
But also, and when you have a go with it you'll see for yourself, it just sits so nicely behind the ball - it looks really inviting and really easy to use.
I can't wait to have a go with the number three, and I think I'm probably going to put a couple in my bag this year; I just can't find any negatives whatsoever. In fact, the only bad thing that I did have to say on the driving range today with this club was that it was really cold out there!
