The MX-300s are a halfway house between the advanced MP range and the mid-level MX ones. They have cavity backs for extra forgiveness and consistency from 3 Iron through to 7 Iron, and a power bar from 8 Iron to PW for control. This dual-style means the clubs are suitable for mid-level and low-handicap players.
From address to the ball landing on the green, we love what these clubs do. The club face is pretty small, which helps with playability. The top-line is slim and the cavities are constructed in such a way as to prevent the club being too deep. There is only a slight offset, which really rewards the players who have refined their swings and are looking for shot making.
Workability is enhanced relative to the other MX line, and almost every other mid-range iron, while ball striking is satisfying and solid. This is helped by a dual-cambered sole which helps to drastically reduce the energy sapped by the turf during your back swing or, critically, as you swing through the ball.
In the longer irons, the design of the cavity is also key. While the weighting is concentrated low and further back in the head to encourage a penetrative flight, the cavity does also widen the sweet spot for better forgiveness. But these are not beginners clubs, and the leeway they afford is not unlimited; with their size and limited offset, a poor shot will be punished.
In the shorter clubs, the power bar forsakes the forgiveness of the cavity back for brilliant workability. You can impart varied loft and shape on your approaches, and spin is really helped by the forged grooves on the club face that grip the ball and get plenty of rip on it.
After researching the vibrations acting on the club in development, Mizuno were able to fine tune their offering, and the result is that the Mizuno MX-300 Graphite Irons feel precisely engineered and tailor made. The thought put into the design translates to a wonderfully performing rage of irons that would not be out of place in the hands of really advanced players, as well as the mid-level ones.
