Review: Nike Golf Victory Red Full Cavity Steel Irons

Written by  Tim Pettifer on Tuesday, 20 September 2011

Nike golf has developed three sets of irons which target each player demographic. We review the most forgiving set of the VR series, the Full Cavity Victory Red Irons here.

Although the Full Cavity Irons may be the easiest to hit, I wouldn't necessarily recommend them to anyone with a handicap over 16-18. All of the clubs in the series have been reverse engineered from the VR Forged TW Blades which are used by Mr Woods himself. This set of high end precision irons is then amalgamated into the interim Forged Split Cavity (for single figure players) and finally made accessible to us 'aspiring' players in the form of the VR Full Cavity Irons.

These irons certainly fill a very satisfying niche and look great without all of the technological gimmickry associated with the pure improvement irons market. The clubs are simple and sleek and seem to be built for one purpose only, hitting the ball as best you can - and they do.

A true test of a club is how it feels, and when you're aspiring to shave strokes off your score, that feeling should be nothing. When you strike the ball beautifully all you should feel is satisfaction accompanied by a lovely sound, no abrupt contact or vibration. Once you get your eye in with the VR series it feels like pure golfing bliss. Clean and smooth.

These results are achieved in somewhat of a different way from you usual iron. They are thin with a nice top line and sole so you can control the ball. The contoured perimeter cavity actually places the centre of gravity behind the ball so you get cleaner striking and better feel. You also get the benefits of perimeter weighting for stability while maintaining a low centre of gravity as the top-line thickens towards the sole to create a penetrating trajectory.

The CG is further manipulated throughout the set with a tungsten resin insert which ranges from a three piece construction in the lower irons to a precision one piece forged head in the nine iron. This means you get the best trajectory and feel throughout the set and gain extra control where you need it. The VR Full Cavity Irons also come with True Temper Dynamic Gold Steel Shafts and Victory Red grips which really complement the objectives of the clubs.

If you are looking to improve your game and want to move away from bulky improvement irons then these are the clubs for you. By using proven tour technology Nike has been able to deliver a club that feels great, inspires confidence and can take your game to the next level. By ignoring the higher handicappers Nike have been able to concentrate on developing a true player's iron that will have you striking the ball like a pro in no time.

What The Web is Saying

"These cavity back irons will help golfers develop their game while helping cut out those disaster shots that can ruin your round." - golfmagic.com

"Their accuracy, distance and feel also are almost unparalleled. The clubs will likely help an established player improve, but beginners are probably better off with a starter set." - golflink.com
