Review: Odyssey Golf Black Series Tour Design Putter

Written by  James Cornish on Friday, 06 January 2012

With 71 wins across all six major professional Tours in 2011, Odyssey Golf certainly know how to design great putters. Here we review the Odyssey Golf Black Series Tour Design Putter.

Developed
with the help of Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els, the Odyssey Golf Black Series Tour Design Putter, aimed at golfers of any handicap, truly is a beautifully designed club, both inside and out.

This putter benefits from Advanced Roll Technology (ART) which uses a multi-material construction consisting of a club head milled from soft 1025 carbon steel and a tungsten flange, allowing for a lower, deeper centre of gravity which creates a quicker forward roll. The club's milled face produces great distance control and a smoother roll, while the urethane-dampening layer between the steel club head and the tungsten flange results in an enhanced feel on impact.

Now we all know that golf club manufacturers make all sorts of exciting claims about their products, some of which, in practice, turn out to have been somewhat overstated. However we at Leaderboard Golf reckon Odyssey have really come through on their promises with this putter.

After a few rounds with the Black Series Tour Design Putter, we found our ball striking to be far more consistent than with many other putters, not to mention an increase in ball speed. The nice feel as you hit the ball, along with the simple, white alignment aid just inspire confidence in every shot you make.

This putter doesn't just perform well though, it looks good too. Its brooding, deep black PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) finish looks very cool, but also has the practical purpose of being anti-glare.

While we really can't say enough good things about the Odyssey Golf Black Series Tour Design Putter, we would however caution those with higher handicaps before they consider buying one. The club does not have the amount of forgiveness a player of marginal ability might hope for, and for that reason we would recommend it to mid to low handicap players only.

The Odyssey Golf Black Series Tour Design Putter is available to buy in various models.

What the Web is Saying

"Delivers predictable distance results; sweet, precise, smooth sensation like high-end blades are supposed to have; sleek beauty has rich, expensive look." - golf.com

"Wonderful combination of stability and feel; deep, gratifying sound on sweet-spot strikes; simple to interpret center impact as opposed to mis-hits." - topgolfputters.com

"The milled black face offers a superb roll. The strike is also slightly firmer than the White Ice range, making it more suitable for year-round golf in the UK." - golf-monthly.co.uk
