Review: Odyssey Golf White Ice Sabertooth 2 Putter

Written by  Graham Green on Wednesday, 02 November 2011

As the number one putter brand on the professional tours, Odyssey Golf have much to be proud of. So we decided to try out their White Ice Sabertooth 2 Putter

.

The Sabertooth 2 Putter is part of Odyssey's phenomenally successful White Ice range and features the White Ice insert, which has been designed to be slightly firmer than their previous inserts. They implemented this change because golf balls have been getting softer, resulting in a slightly 'dead' feeling on impact with putters that have the softer inserts. The firmer insert has overcome this problem however, allowing for faster ball speeds.

Out on the green we found this adaptation worked perfectly. We found the club to be very responsive and were impressed with the distance control we achieved. There was a real consistency with every stroke.

Another notable feature of this putter is the roughened face surface which enhances the sound on impact with softer golf balls. Odyssey claim this rough texture also helps to increase friction between the ball and the insert to promote forward roll. We certainly noticed a good roll on the ball every time we used this club.

With shorter putts the Sabertooth 2 does much of the work for you without you having to put to much effort into your swing. We didn't think it was quite as good with longer putts but if you struggle with short to intermediate range putts, we would definitely recommend the White Ice Sabertooth 2 Putter as this is where it really comes into its own.

The club's radical head shape is very space-age with high-density dual fangs that position more weight to the outside of the club, keeping it on-line during your stroke for greater accuracy. This design also produces a higher MOI for improved forgiveness, while the aiming channels inside the fangs makes lining up putts a piece of cake.

The look of this putter may not be to everyone's taste, but everything in its design has a purpose, right down to the dark nickel finish that helps to reduce glare. We think golfers of all levels will benefit from using the Sabertooth 2.

What the Web is Saying

"The sound is almost as good as an all metal putter and the feel is excellent. In our view this is a great insert and putter for all golfers on the speed of greens that most amateurs play on and you should definitely give it a try." - golfalot.com

"The Odyssey White Ice Sabertooth is my favorite mallet design to-date. And it's performance on money putts will quickly make you (and your playing partners/victims) forget it's quirky look at address." - addicted2golf.net

"If you found previous White Hot inserts a little too soft and unresponsive this White Ice insert will appeal, with plenty of sound feedback and feel through the clubface. The Sabretooth model will appeal to those who like high MOI putters, with plenty of options alternative options for those preferring blade or mallet.

"No better example of a modern, forgiving mallet putter." - todaysgolfer.co.uk
