Review: TaylorMade RAC Tumble Wedge

Written by  Will O'Doherty on Thursday, 02 June 2011

So often in golf, the hardest part of getting the ball in the hole comes in the last 50 yards. TaylorMade has designed their latest wedge to make life around the green easier for golfers of all levels. We review the TaylorMade RAC Tumble Wedge here.

The key design elements of the Tumble Wedge, which comes in 52, 56 and 60 degree lofts, are the curved trailing edge and the Y-cutter grooves on the club face. The first allows the holder to open the club face up easily, increasing versatility and allowing for very lofted shots to be played.

The second is all about spin. When TaylorMade released their Y-cutter grooved wedges, they were shown to generate a huge amount more spin then their box-cut or U-cut counterparts, with the added bonus of being very kind to the ball's surface. In practice, both of these elements are apparent.

By far and away the most impressive aspect of these wedges' performance is the control they give you. Playing in hard and fast conditions can make for incredibly tricky approaches, but the spin these clubs impart on the ball is incredible. There is very little run-on in a normal shot, while it is easy to generate bite and backspin too. Players who dream of routinely getting within ten yards will love them, and so will those with the talent to make spin a real part of the short game.

In terms of versatility, the clubs are excellent. Off the fairway, and not just on full swings, there is a great consistency of feel and distance to go along with the brilliant spin. This is mimicked when playing from the rough, including pretty deep stuff, the sand and in close. The way that the trailing edge is designed allows for the club to be opened up without it feeling like performance is being compromised.

You might think that a club this technical would be tricky to play, but on top of the brilliant performance, they are actually quite forgiving. Two semi-circular notches in the back of an otherwise classic muscle-back club expand the sweet spot and mean that off-centre hits still get the benefit of the club's feel and control. You also get the benefit of playing with a classic looking muscle-back with a thin top line.

These clubs are superb and would be a fine addition to any golfer's bag. The only thing that stopped us giving them full marks was the absence of shaft options, which might not suit some golfers.
