Review: Titleist Golf Vokey SM4 Black Nickel Wedges

Written by  James Cornish on Saturday, 28 January 2012

After falling in love with the Titleist Spin Milled Tour Vokey Wedges last year, were really excited to get our hands on the Titleist Golf Vokey SM4 Black Nickel Wedges, which we review here.

Titleist is arguably golf's premier brand, a combination of history, technology and quality all wrapped in a beautiful package. Titleist irons are almost always classically elegant. But the engineering at play is by no means stuck in the past; they are often on the cutting edge, especially those that Bob Vokey, the world's leading wedge designer, puts his name to.

The Titleist Vokey SM4 Wedges are no different. They are brilliant to look at, especially the black nickel, and they play just as well. The clubs are slightly bigger and their topline has been tinkered with slightly. They come with five different sole grinds, but all are designed to minimise interaction with turf and sand.

On the course, the difference is noticeable. Swings of all angles and speeds go through the ball with minimal interruption from the ground. This not only made our shots better, but allowed us to play a wider variety of shots, improving our game further.

The real selling point for the Titleist Golf Vokey SM4 Black Nickel Wedges are the face, however. The groove shape and configuration is right at the limit of what is Tour legal, meaning they have the best setup for spin and control of any competition clubs out there, and the milled face simply adds to the package.

The grooves have been strengthened to maximise the grip they put on a ball, so you can exercise a massive amount of control on it, especially from fairway lies where there isn't any grass to get in the way. It isn't just full swings either; Vokey SM4 wedges have been optimised for 'maximum partial shot spin' so even the shortest of chips can still be controlled.

Coming with Dynamic Gold steel shafts as standard, ideal for more advanced players looking for better feel, and in an incredible 21 loft and bounce combinations, any mid-to-low handicappers out there are bound to find a Titleist Vokey SM4 Wedge that is ideal for them. The only weakness really is that these will only be truly useful in the hands of better players, but once they are, there aren't many clubs out there that are better.

What The Web is Saying

"The Vokey SM4 wedge is a delight to play with and the soft steel face is lovely to look at in whichever finish you choose. A great flexible range of quality wedges and one we would recommend trying." - golfalot.com
