Review: Tour Striker Steel Training Wedge

Written by  Sam Reynolds on Thursday, 30 June 2011

The Tour Steel Training Wedge 56 Degree is an ideal club for those looking to improve on chips and pitches. Although suitable for all swing speeds it is aimed primarily at those with a mid to high handicap who are looking to achieve more accuracy and higher lofts. We review the Tour Steel Training Wedge.

If you find you are trying to scoop the ball too much, the Training Wedge helps you eliminate this habit and learn to hit the ball first, and the turf second. Due to its shape, the club head won't allow you to scoop the ball and any attempts will get you nowhere. Instead it encourages you to adopt a more practical stance and hit down on the ball, which will reward you with an improved impact position.

Being a wedge, the club is aimed at improving your short game so you can learn to pitch with precision and really feel in control of the ball. You may notice that there is very little club face positioned below the sweet spot but this is entirely intentional as it gives you no option than to take on a better stance to hit the ball straight on.

The wedge relies on you learning to apply forward shaft lean as a natural part of your shot on impact, which will ensure that the ball is struck below its centre of gravity. While many people tend to play with a scooping technique, this method of hitting downwards is in fact how it should always be played. When the impact is just right it will result in a strong, controlled shot with as much lift as is required.

Playing with the wedge will help you become accustomed to this new stance and when it begins to feel more natural you can apply it when playing with other wedges to really see how your game has improved.

If it feels strange at first, this is nothing to worry about. The club is designed to highlight any flaws in how you play and to help you iron out these problems in a natural way that suits you. Before you know it, you will discover a new, comfortable stance that comes naturally and lets you play your shots the way you want to.

What The Web is Saying

"Better players might find that success comes too easily, and higher handicap players might find it too frustrating.  As I’ve written repeatedly, both of these problems could be addressed by purchasing the correct model for the given player’s ability level." - mygolfspy.com

"I recommend the Tour Striker to all levels of golfers, but those who will benefit the most from it are mid to high handicap players. This level of golfer have not yet learned to hit the ball with a descending blow and lead with the hands, and the Tour Striker is ideal at showing you how to produce this impact position in real time." - intothegrain.com
