Earlier today I did a review for the driver, which was really fantastic, but this, let me tell you, is in another league.
This fairway wood is radically different from anything that I've seen on the market before, or anything that TaylorMade have produced. They've really taken this fairway wood to new limits.
You'll notice, at the base here, that we've got this pocket design, and that's really changed how the ball comes off the club face. What TaylorMade have done is actually managed to increase the COR of this club head up to 0.81%, so only 0.02% away from the maximum legal limit. For a fairway wood, this is phenomenal, and it's a place that TaylorMade have never been before.
What this does in real terms is, if you swing at approximately 90 miles per hour, you will hit this fairway wood 17 yards longer. I watched a video last week of Dustin Johnson hitting this club, and believe it or not he actually hit it 312 yards. Already, I'm really excited about this product.
The crown is made with a thick crown design, so that helps to lower the centre of gravity, and it's also got a slightly more forward centre of gravity which will help lower the spin rate. So, with that low centre of gravity giving it a nice high launch, it's also doing that with a low spin rate.
It's made with a lovely lightweight graphite shaft and grip, so again that's going to give you more club head speed, giving much greater distance.
The white crown is anti-glare, and the black face also makes it really easy to align properly when you address the golf ball. Already my mouth's watering - I want to get onto the driving range. I'm going to hit a few shots and come back to tell you what I think of it and hope that I'm going to get those extra 17 yards from my fairway wood shots as well.
Truly amazing. I have to say that the name RocketBallz had a very strange ring in my ear when I first heard it, and I'm still not sure - but when you see this fairway wood go, you will realise why the name RocketBallz is used. It really does power the ball, and it's incredible; I don't think I've ever hit a fairway wood as far as I've just hit this.
It looks great, it sits really nicely to the ball, it sounds amazing when you hit it and my god does the ball come off. I'm not hitting it 312 yards unfortunately, but I'm definitely hitting it a lot further than I ever have before - it's probably going to go in my bag this season.
So come down to the Leaderboard Golf Centre in Reading and have a hit - I tell you what, for a fairway wood, it may make some of you guys tempted to leave the driver in the garage.
What the Web is Saying
"The face is slightly deeper and bigger than the Burner 2.0, which aids forgiveness. Shots from the bottom of the face fly noticeably further than previous models." - golf-monthly.co.uk
"The Rocketballz fairway is hard to beat and you need to try it - just so you can say you have." - golfalot.com
