Interview: Euan Gillon from Your Golf Travel

Euan Gillon from Your Golf Travel speaks to Leaderboard about his passion for the game and the incredible destinations he's taken his clubs.
How did you get into golf?

My father gave me a half set of junior clubs for Christmas when I was five years old, and I remember dragging him to the local golf course that day in about six inches of snow!

If you had to name one thing you love the most about golf, what would it be?

For me it is the places that golf has taken me - I love to travel and have been fortunate to visit some incredible destinations with my clubs.

What has been your favourite golfing moment personally?

Bit of a cheat as my clubs weren't actually involved, but I was fortunate enough to attend the US Masters last year. Like most golfers, I had watched many on television and it really is remarkable to experience in the flesh.

What has been your favourite professional golfing moment?

For me there's nothing to touch the drama of The Ryder Cup. I was at Celtic Manor in October and the atmosphere, despite the weather, was fantastic. Great emotion when McDowell holed the putt on 16.

How did you come be involved with Your Golf Travel?

I always wanted to associate my career with my interest in golf and I heard through an acquaintance that there was a great start up in the golf travel industry, and that was that.

Do you read any golfing blogs or news sites, if so, which ones?

Apart from Leaderboard and YGT's 19th Hole Blog, (of course!), I often take a look at Golf Blogger and Golf Magic, both of which have interesting content.

What makes a good golf blog?

I think it's all about engaging the reader with articles that are topical and giving the best chance to interact. Clean styling and attractive images are also really important to the user experience.

Do you follow any golfers / golf fanatics on Twitter?

I think everyone follows Poulter, who seems to have grasped Twitter better than most of the golfers.

Do you think the golfing industry is using social media to its full potential?

No, but I think that is the exciting thing about social media, that there is no apparent ceiling to the reach it can provide.  That's our attitude towards these new channels, which is why we're trying to engage as many golfers as possible through Twitter, Facebook etc.

Do you think golf courses could benefit by using the internet and social media?

Absolutely. Certainly golf courses now have a better grasp of representing themselves online than they used to, and I think the same will happen with social media. Golf is never likely to be at the cutting edge of these sorts of technologies, but from a travel perspective I think lots of consumers are aware of the potential benefits of getting involved with their favourite providers online.
Do you buy golfing equipment online? Which are some of your favourite places?

I always buy from Direct Golf UK, because they have unbeatable deals.

What is the latest product you have bought, either online or from a store?

I bought a new Taylor Made driver last year which brought me into this century in terms of driver technology!

What are Your Golf Travel’s goals and what are your personal golfing goals for 2011?

Your Golf Travel.com's goal is simple - to find the right fairway for as many golfers as possible. As for personal goals, continue to play in new places and help the company grow.
