Johnnie Walker Championship to be Dropped in 2014

Written by  on Friday, 21 December 2012

The European Tour has confirmed that the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles will not take place in 2014 in order to give time over to the staging of the Ryder Cup.

The event, played every year in August, is to be left of the 2014 European Tour schedule for fear of it interfering with preparations for the Ryder Cup, which is being staged at Gleneagles in the September of that year.

"The magnitude of the Ryder Cup is such that trying to host the Johnnie Walker Championship in the same season would have compromised both events."

"We are very grateful to the management of both Diageo, the owners of Johnnie Walker, and The Gleneagles Hotel for agreeing to postpone the Johnnie Walker Championship so that preparations for the Ryder Cup can begin as planned in July 2014," said Ryder Cup director Richard Hills.

"The magnitude of the Ryder Cup is such that trying to host the Johnnie Walker Championship in the same season would have compromised both events."

Moving the Johnnie Walker Championship to an earlier slot in the Tour schedule was considered but ultimately was ruled out as was the possibility of playing on the King's or Queen's courses given that they would be needed for the players to practice on.

"With regret we have accepted that we have no option but to postpone the Johnnie Walker Championship for a year," said championship director Graeme Marchbank.

The Championship will return to Gleneagles in 2015 and will be played as usual as part of the 2013 season.

Andrew Wild of Leaderboard Golf's Sandford Springs said:

"It's a real shame that the championship won't be played that year, but understandable considering the Ryder Cup is such a massive event."
