Last chance saloon for Donald as US PGA tees off

Written by  Paul Gibbons on Wednesday, 10 August 2011
Luke Donald is hoping his dislike of the par-three 15th at the Atlanta Athletic Club will not stop him from breaking his major duck at the US PGA which starts tomorrow.

As the last major of the season tees off, the world number one is feeling the pressure of failing to win a title this year.

“I'm never a big fan of long par 3s,” he said about the 265-yard three shooter, which has a pond to the right of the green, and a deep bunker to the left.

“I think some of the world's greatest par 3s are very short. The seventh at Pebble, 12th at Augusta, Postage Stamp, you can keep naming quite a few that are short and at the same time quite tricky.”

The 15th at the Georgia course may be causing him concern, but the 33-year-old won the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship and eight other top tens this year, including being runner up to Adam Scott at last week’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational.

His consistency should give him confidence but there’s no doubt media speculation is making him feel the pinch.

"Majors are in this day and age made out to be the biggest deal," Donald said at Atlanta Athletic Club on Tuesday.

“People put a lot of pressure on the guys who haven't won, like myself and Lee (Westwood) and Adam (Scott) and whoever else it might be.

“Sometimes you can go to these events and just try too hard.”

Luke Donald tees up tomorrow alongside Alvaro Quiros and Nick Watney at 8.25am local time.
