Male and female amateur golf associations vote on merger to address declining club memberships

Written by  Paul Gibbons on Tuesday, 15 November 2011

English golf faces an uncertain future, as members of the male and female amateur golf associations vote on Wednesday on whether to merge into a single governing body to address dwindling numbers in club memberships.

The male-run English Golf Union and the English Women’s Golf Association are concerned that the segregation of men and women is “increasingly out of step with people’s expectations”, according to the Associated Press.

Both associations believe "the negative perception of golf being a divided game and not welcoming to all will be reinforced”, if members fail to push the merger through.

Seventy-five percent of the votes need to be cast in favour at each meeting for the merger to take place.

If the vote goes through the proposal would create a single national governing body for amateur golf in England called England Golf.

Chief executive of the EGU, John Petrie, says the decision will be "vital for the future of golf".

What do you think? Should the EGU and the EWGA merge? Is golf outdated? Will the merger change anything? Leave your thoughts in the comment box below.
