US Take Lead In Presidents Cup

Written by  James Cornish on Thursday, 17 November 2011

Tiger Woods has been forced to endure the worst matchplay defeat of his career as the US took a 4 - 2 lead after the first day of the Presidents Cup in Melbourne.

Woods partnered by Steve Stricker, and forced to face former caddie Steve Williams, was playing against Adam Scott and KJ Choi, losing by 7&6.

Woods said:

"They got off to a quick start and we couldn't keep up. We kept falling to the wrong side of these slopes. The golf course is difficult, it's hard to make up shots."

It was the only win of the day for the international side. Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson took the first point in beating South African Ernie Els and Japan's Ryo Ishikawa 6&4.

Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar came back from three points down with six holes to play to earn them a half, while Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk won 4&3 over Retief Goosen and Robert Allenby.
