Video Tutorial: What Happens if your Ball Moves on the Green

Written by  Graham Green on Wednesday, 29 June 2011
What happens if your ball moves on the green as you're lining up for a putt? Graham Green explains what to do in this situation, and why Jim Furyk didn't incur a penalty when this happened to him.

You may wonder why I've just backed away from my putt. Just as what happened to Jim Furyk at the Heritage earlier in the year, it's happened to me here too.

I just what to explain a little bit about exactly the rule, and why Jim Furyk didn't actually get a penalty shot - but why it did affect his mind on that putt.

So what happened? Jim came into his putt to roll it up the slope onto the green. As he took his stance and placed his putter down behind the ball, Jim thought that his ball moved. That's when he backed away and called in for a referee.

During that discussion, the referee wanted to ascertain whether that ball had moved from its original spot. Jim Furyk wasn't particularly sure whether the ball had returned to its original spot or had still moved away from it. Because the referee and Jim had both thought that in this circumstance, the ball was deemed to be back on its original spot, there was no penalty and Jim continued.

Quite clearly it had affected his mindset for that round, and he went on to four-putt the green unfortunately.
If, for example, that ball had rolled away from its original spot, and the player had taken his stance as we saw with Jim, then he would have incurred a one stroke penalty.

The important bit here is that you must then replace the ball to its original spot before you continue. If you fail to do so, you will incur another stroke penalty for playing from the wrong position.

So let me just recap. If you take your stance and place your putter behind the ball, and it oscillates - so it moves, and moves back to its original spot, there is no penalty. If the ball moves and doesn't return to its original spot, there is a one shot penalty and you must replace the ball to the original spot before continuing.

Graham runs the Leaderboard Golf Centre - a very busy 37-bay Driving Range, Retail Store, Custom Fitting and Coaching improvement Centre.

He also runs the retail side for Reading Golf Club, where Leaderboard have a second shop.

His role consists of a multitude of responsibilities, from standard office work to face-to-face selling, custom fitting and team management. In his own words – "It's a very varied role and always full on, yet extremely challenging and exciting. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, so and I'll do most jobs if required - that includes, being a green-keeper, repair man and general Jack of all trades."

Graham started his golf career at Reading Golf Club working with Andrew Wild, who was the head professional there at the time. When Paul and Jennifer Gibbons set up Leaderboard and purchased the driving range in December 1999, Graham jumped at the chance to work for them.

It was Paul Gibbons' enthusiasm for golf, along with his business acumen, which encouraged Graham and meant that he didn't hesitate when he was given the opportunity to work for Leaderboard. Graham believes it's a privilege and a pleasure to be working with such great people on the Leaderboard team.

Graham qualified from the PGA with Distinction in 2003, gaining a Titleist Scholarship. A couple of years later, when Andrew Wild moved across to run Sandford Springs Golf Club, Graham was promoted to General Manager at the Leaderboard Golf Centre.

He describes the favourite parts of his job role with great enthusiasm – "My biggest buzz is seeing amateur golfers of all abilities improving and enjoying the game more. Golf has been very good to me and being able to give back to the sport gives me great drive and determination."
