Golf Travel Guide: South of France

When it comes to the South of France, life simply doesn't get any better. Whether you're drawn to the vineyards of Provence, the glamour of Cannes, or the azure waters of Nice, a feast for all the senses awaits you.

The region boasts some fantastic courses and with its temperate climate, a round of golf is sure to be a pleasant experience. Although the South of France is generally a more expensive place to holiday, that extra bit of class you get just can't be beaten. Also, you will find that the green fees and membership fees for courses in France are far more reasonable than the better known golfing destinations found in Portugal and Spain.

Although many golf courses in the area are private membership only, there are still plenty to choose from for a short golf holiday. Here are our top picks of golf courses in the region.

Barbaroux

Set in the heart of Provence and surrounded by vineyards and 87 hectares of woodland, this stunning 18 hole, par 72 golf course is one of the most prestigious in Europe. At only 6,069 metres long, it is rather short, but don't let that fool you; Barbaroux is a tricky course that will require some thought to get through successfully. A short distance from the French Riviera, the climate of Provence offers 300 days of sunshine every year, so you will have plenty of opportunities to play some good golf.

Green fees

  • 18 holes - 71 euros
  • 9 holes - 49 euros
  • Day green fee - 86 euros
  • Book of 10 green fees - 530 euros (18 holes); 370 euros (9 holes)

Accommodation

The course is part of the Barbaroux Golf Resort with the hotel nestled within the tranquillity of a forest. A standard double room cost from 104 euros a night, while prices for a double suite start at 178 euros. Various package deals which include room and green fees are also available – prices start from 273 euros for a standard double and one day's green fees.

Saint Donat

A short drive from Cannes, the Saint Donat golf course offers the best of both worlds. You can enjoy a relaxing round of golf during the day and hop back to Cannes in the evening to soak up the nightlife. This 18 hole, par 71 golf course, with its hilly landscape and obstacles, is a pleasure to play and includes other facilities such as a driving range, training greens, and a practice bunker.

Green fees

  • 18 holes - 78 euros
  • 9 holes - 44 euros
  • Book of 6 green fees (18 holes) - 410 euros
  • Book of 12 green fees (18 holes) - 795 euros

Accommodation

There a plenty of hotels to choose from in nearby Cannes to suit all pockets. For those on a budget, La Villa Tosca in the centre of Cannes is a charming 3 star hotel; standard double rooms are priced at around 110 euros a night. If you want a bit more luxury, the Majestic Barriere, popular with celebrities, will set you back 660 euros a night for a superior room with sea views.

St Endreol

If you're looking for some zen calm while you play, this 18 hole, par 72 golf course could be the one for you. Part of the St Endreol Golf & Spa Resort, it is regarded as one of the most attractive courses in France, offering some spectacular views. Situated between the river Endre and the rock of Roquebrune, the design of the course really does make the most of the varied landscape. Take note; accuracy is more important than length with this course so leave aside your driver!

Graham Green

Graham runs the Leaderboard Golf Centre - a very busy 37-bay Driving Range, Retail Store, Custom Fitting and Coaching improvement Centre.

He also runs the retail side for Reading Golf Club, where Leaderboard have a second shop.

His role consists of a multitude of responsibilities, from standard office work to face-to-face selling, custom fitting and team management. In his own words – "It's a very varied role and always full on, yet extremely challenging and exciting. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, so and I'll do most jobs if required - that includes, being a green-keeper, repair man and general Jack of all trades."

Graham started his golf career at Reading Golf Club working with Andrew Wild, who was the head professional there at the time. When Paul and Jennifer Gibbons set up Leaderboard and purchased the driving range in December 1999, Graham jumped at the chance to work for them.

It was Paul Gibbons' enthusiasm for golf, along with his business acumen, which encouraged Graham and meant that he didn't hesitate when he was given the opportunity to work for Leaderboard. Graham believes it's a privilege and a pleasure to be working with such great people on the Leaderboard team.

Graham qualified from the PGA with Distinction in 2003, gaining a Titleist Scholarship. A couple of years later, when Andrew Wild moved across to run Sandford Springs Golf Club, Graham was promoted to General Manager at the Leaderboard Golf Centre.

He describes the favourite parts of his job role with great enthusiasm – "My biggest buzz is seeing amateur golfers of all abilities improving and enjoying the game more. Golf has been very good to me and being able to give back to the sport gives me great drive and determination."
