Golf Travel Guide: Spain

Golf Travel Guide: Spain

Spain has long been a favoured destination for those looking for a golfing holiday. With its warm climate and fantastic golf courses, it is an ideal choice. It provides all year round opportunities to play, so when others are struggling their way through 18 holes on a wet and cold course back in the UK, you can be enjoying a round in shorts and a short sleeved polo shirt.

There are more than 300 golf courses throughout Spain and most cater very well for visiting golfers so to save you the trouble of searching around, we've put together some golf holiday suggestions for you to consider.

La Cala Golf Resort & Spa

La Cala Golf Resort & Spa is the largest golf resort in Spain and boasts no less than three fantastic 18-hole championship courses as well as a six-hole par three practice course. Located at the foot of the Mijas Mountains, 20 km south of Malaga, La Cala has everything you could possibly want. The three courses consist of Campo American, Campo Asia, and Campo Europa, each offering their own challenges, so you'll never be board.

Green fees

  • 18 holes - from 45 euros
  • Three course pass - from 156 euros
  • Season ticket - from 199 euros

Accommodation

La Cala has a 107-room hotel on site with prices starting from 144 euros a night for a standard double. Package deals with green fees included are also available; prices start from 269 euros per person for three nights B&B, two green fees, and one dinner. There are always special deals to be had though so check their website. If you're on a tighter budget, there are plenty of hotels in the area of Mijas Costa. A standard double room at the Calamijas Hotel for example costs from 64 euros a night.

Santa Clara Golf Club

Having only opened in 1998, the Santa Clara Golf Club just outside Marbella, is a relative newcomer to the Spanish golfing scene. With its wide fairways, fairly level ground, and little rough, this 18-hole par 71 course is ideal for those looking for a relaxing golf holiday. It's not a course to be sniffed at though, having held the Spanish PGA Championship in 2003.

Green fees

  • 18 holes (Incl. buggy) - from 75 euros
  • 9 holes (Incl. buggy) - from 45 euros
  • Two green fees including buggy - from 112 euros

Accommodation

Whether you're after a luxury or budget hotel, Marbella can provide – that and everything in between. The Gran Melia Don Pepe is a spectacular 5-star hotel and at 215 euros for a double room without any extras, so is the price. In complete contrast, the Hotel Central is a small hotel with a cosy feel to it; a double or twin room will cost around 70 euros.

Club De Campo Del Mediterráneo

Situated 50 miles north of the beautiful city of Valencia, the Club De Campo Del Mediterraneo is one of the best parkland golf courses in Spain. Set amongst olive, carob, and poplar trees, this 18-hole course is where Sergio Garcia played as a junior, and it will definitely test your golfing skills.

Green fees

  • Weekdays - 50 euros
  • Weekends and feast days - 60 euros
  • Coupon for six green fees - 240 euros
  • There is also a 20% discount for guests playing with members

Accommodation

The town of Castellón is less than two miles from the Mediterraneo and has a wide variety of hotels. The Intur Castellón Hotel has double/twin rooms for around 60 euros a night, while the NH Mindoro Hotel, set in the heart of the town, offers one nights stay in a double room for as little as 45 euros.

Son Vida Golf

Opened in 1964, the Son Vida golf course is the oldest on the island of Majorca and with its stunning views across the Bay of Palma, is an absolute delight to play on. Renovated in 2001, much of the 18-hole course is hilly and covered in dense forest and although fairly short, it's not for the faint hearted!

Green fees

  • 18 holes - from 75 euros
  • 9 holes - from 50 euros
  • 18 holes (resort guest) - from 55 euros
  • 9 holes (resort guest) - from 50 euros

Accommodation

Son Vida is part of the Arabella Golf & Spa Resort which comprises of three luxury hotels: The Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf Hotel, Castillo Hotel Son Vida, and St. Regis Mardavall. With room prices starting at an eye watering 280 euros a night, you'll need deep pockets. There are other, more reasonable options available though. The Isla Mallorca Hotel has double rooms for around 70 euros a night.

Flights

Spain has long been a popular holiday destination for Brits and the choice of flights from the UK reflects this. Flights to Malaga and Majorca are available from most large UK cities with easyJet; a return flight will cost from around £45 from London Gatwick and £60 from Glasgow. Ryanair offer flights to Valencia from London Stansted, Bristol, East Midlands, and Manchester. Fares for a return flight start at around £40.

Graham Green

Graham runs the Leaderboard Golf Centre - a very busy 37-bay Driving Range, Retail Store, Custom Fitting and Coaching improvement Centre.

He also runs the retail side for Reading Golf Club, where Leaderboard have a second shop.

His role consists of a multitude of responsibilities, from standard office work to face-to-face selling, custom fitting and team management. In his own words – "It's a very varied role and always full on, yet extremely challenging and exciting. I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, so and I'll do most jobs if required - that includes, being a green-keeper, repair man and general Jack of all trades."

Graham started his golf career at Reading Golf Club working with Andrew Wild, who was the head professional there at the time. When Paul and Jennifer Gibbons set up Leaderboard and purchased the driving range in December 1999, Graham jumped at the chance to work for them.

It was Paul Gibbons' enthusiasm for golf, along with his business acumen, which encouraged Graham and meant that he didn't hesitate when he was given the opportunity to work for Leaderboard. Graham believes it's a privilege and a pleasure to be working with such great people on the Leaderboard team.

Graham qualified from the PGA with Distinction in 2003, gaining a Titleist Scholarship. A couple of years later, when Andrew Wild moved across to run Sandford Springs Golf Club, Graham was promoted to General Manager at the Leaderboard Golf Centre.

He describes the favourite parts of his job role with great enthusiasm – "My biggest buzz is seeing amateur golfers of all abilities improving and enjoying the game more. Golf has been very good to me and being able to give back to the sport gives me great drive and determination."
