Golf Travel Guide: Top Five UK Golf Courses

With the UK being home to so many great golf courses, choosing the one for you can be difficult. Here, we have selected our top 5 golf courses, alongside extra travel information such as hotels and transport.

Royal Birkdale Golf Club, Merseyside

Our top golfing location is a coastal, dune course, which encompasses 18 holes. It is within close proximity to Southport, and a small pathway provides the boundary between this revered Open Championship venue and Hillside GC, which adjoins it to the south. Royal Birkdale has played host to many Major championships including The Open and Women's British Open championships on several occasions, as well as some of the biggest team competitions in golf, not least Ryder, Walker and Curtis Cups.

Fees

Green fees costs are weekdays £175; weekends £205. Credit cards are accepted.

Transport

From the centre of Southport, head south on the A565 direction Liverpool. After 1.8 miles, the Royal Birkdale entrance is on your right.

Accommodation

Within 5 miles, lies the 3 star Royal Clifton Hotel. It is the leading golf hotel in Southport and is one the most exciting places in Europe for golfers and they will be able to provide you with a fine golf holidays with their special packages.

Hankley Common Golf Club, Surrey

The 18 hole course is a heathland terrain, gently undulating and situated in the area around Guildford. The course and surrounding area are classified as a 'Site of Special Scientific Interest'. Charles Lawrie, once described the course as "one of the best inland layouts in Britain".

The 7th hole is looked upon as being one of the finest par 3s in the country and the magnificent 18th a superb but challenging finishing hole.

Fees

18-holes weekdays £85; weekends £95. Reduced junior and day ticket rates also available. Credit cards accepted.

Transport

Follow A287 between Farnham and Haslemere. Turn off to Tilford, 5 miles South of Farnham. Course is 1 mile South of Tilford. Turn left at the pub.

Accommodation

Lythe Hill Country House is the best hotel in the area, which is set in 22 acres of countryside and can offer you golf breaks from around £100-£150.

Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club, Lancashire

Our third choice is a seaside links course, which has played host to many major championships including The Open and Women's British Open, as well as some of the biggest team competitions in golf, not least Ryder and Curtis Cups. It is one of the premier links courses in the world, and although it is not a conventionally beautiful golf course, surrounded by suburban housing and flanked by a railway line, it has a charm all of its own.

Fees

18-holes in high season (April thru' Oct): weekdays & Sundays £140; Saturdays £212. Lunch included. Reduced weekday day ticket rates also available. Credit cards accepted

Transport

From Preston follow the A583 direction Blackpool. After approximately 3-4 miles turn left onto the A584 direction Lytham St Annes. After 7 miles, having entered Lytham, the Lytham windmill will be on your left. From the windmill, after a further 2.8 miles on the A584, turn right at traffic lights into St Thomas Road. After 0.4 miles and just after the railway bridge, turn right into St Patrick Road South. Golf clubhouse is 100 yards in front of you.

Accommodation

The Clifton Arms hotel is within easy reach of the course and offers a stunning, tailored service.

Royal St. George's, Kent

As one of the most renowned courses, the layout weaves its way across wonderfully natural and open links terrain. For anyone wanting to play the great links courses of Great Britain and Ireland, Royal St George's is certainly not to be missed. The fact that only three Open winners, Bill Rogers in 1981, Greg Norman in 1993 and Ben Curtis in 2003, have managed to be under par after 72 holes, speaks for itself.

Fees

18-holes in high season (April thru' Oct): £150. Reduced day ticket rates also available. Credit cards accepted (not Amex).

Transport

From the centre of Sandwich (Bell Hotel) follow The Quay for 100 yards before turning sharp right, and after another 150 yards sharp left. Follow Guilford Road south out of Sandwich for 1 mile. Royal St George's golf is on your left before the toll gate.

Accommodation

The four star Bell Hotel in Sandwich is within 5 miles, and can offer golfing packages as well as excellent service and hospitality.

Saunton Golf Club, Devon

The natural coastal dune land make this course extra special to play. The greens are firm and true, as good as any in Britain, and the overall standard of upkeep is usually excellent. Despite the proliferation of new courses nationwide, Saunton's 2 courses have stood up well to the competition. The East Course is ranked No.32 in the Golf World "Top 100 Courses" and the West Course is No 67. And there is only one Club with 2 better links courses in the whole country and that is St Andrews.

Fees

18-holes in high season (April thru' Oct): weekdays £74; weekends £79. Reduced day ticket, junior and twilight rates also available. Credit cards accepted.
