Review: Mizuno Speedster II Bag

Written by  Kevin Mullaney on Wednesday, 13 April 2011

As more and more golf carts and trollies appear on courses around the country the golf bag itself is changing to become more functional and fit for purpose.

Having carried a bag my whole life I decided to try a few rounds with the new Mizuno Speedster II Cart Bag and see if it makes a difference.

The first thing you will notice about the Speedster II is that it seems lighter yet more robust than any other cart bag I've carried. Weighing only 3Kg the bag looks great and is easily portable off the cart and easy to get in and out of the boot. So you no longer need to have the strength of a tour caddy to lug the bag to and from the clubhouse, which is a definite plus.

The padded hand and shoulder straps make it comfortable for short distances and this immediately eleviates many of my long-founded criticisms of traditional cart bags. Also after trying to fit my carry bag on a trolley I found it doesn't work as the legs on the bags get in the way and it doesn't secure properly to a cart.

The Speedster II fits snugly into any cart or trolley due to its shape and can be easily secured through the grab handles. Once fitted the Speedster II is designed to be open facing for ease of access to provide you with everything you need around the course quickly and simply.

The Speedster II can carry up to 14 clubs in the TN Mizuno 'top cuff' compartments which have separate bays so you waste no time selecting a club and moving onto the next shot. These divisions also protect the clubs from damaging one another which is a drawback of many carry bags.

I found this compartment feature coupled with a trolley or cart does actually help you maintain more of a rhythm between shots as you don't have to put the bag down, concentrate on selection and pick it up again to move on. Things move quicker and all you worry about is the shot in hand.

The pockets and pouches are designed with every accessory and weather condition in mind. In case of a sudden British downpour there is a lightweight waterproof hood which easily snaps on to protect your clubs. The two large lengthwise apparel pockets are also ideal for storing waterproofs and other golf gear for those soggy rounds.

There is a dedicated GPS, golf rangefinder compartment for easy access and a traditional pelican pouch to store your golf balls and tees. The final Mizuno touch is an insulated drinks pouch which can store two bottles and keep them cool all round.

The only oversight in design is the umbrella slot, which can accommodate a large golf umbrella but gets in the way of your clubs if you are driving the golf cart. However all in all I really enjoyed my shoulder free rounds and found I was able to concentrate more on my game and rhythm.

I have never been a huge fan of cart golf and cart bags in particular. They have been for too long big, bulky and ergonomically irritating. However I think they have now evolved into a necessary accessory and if I was to play more with a trolley then the Mizuno Speedster II would be the bag for me.

What The Web is Saying

"To summarize as a cart bag the Mizuno SPEEDSTER II is great value for money and a lot of thought has gone into making sure that it looks after the clubs and provides lots of easily accessible space" - rateyourcourse.co.uk

"Great bag! Vibrant 2 tone colour, the picture doesn't do it justice. Very practical too with excellent storage. The drink pouch is a nice touch too. Overall I would reccomend this product." - direct-golf.co.uk
