Product Review: Mizuno MP-630 Fast Track Driver

Written by  Heather McKay on Tuesday, 01 February 2011

With the MP-630 Fast Track Driver, Mizuno’s developers and engineers have created one of their finest clubs to date. This club features a traditional 445cc clubface and benefits from the latest development in club technology. Mizuno have introduced the Fast Track moveable weight system and the Hot Metal clubface design, which both work to great effect.

The clubface is slightly open and has a size of 445cc. In addition to its decent size, the Cortech face design makes the MP-630 Fast Track Driver forgive off-centre hits relatively well, which makes it a great club both for advanced and less experienced players. The traditional shape of the head offers great power and reacts very well during impact, providing very soft feedback and good noise attenuation. It has a sound titanium construction and features the latest version of Mizuno’s Hot Metal Ti9 Technology that makes for amazing ball speeds.

With the MP-630 Fast Track Driver, Mizuno’s state-of-the-art moveable weight system allows you to finely shape your drives and convert the power of your swings into straight and precise shots. It consists in two 8-gram sliding weights that can be adjusted in 10 different positions, ultimately providing 45 ball trajectory settings. Players who like to calculate and shape their shots will be able to get fully creative with this system. Just by switching the weight positions, you can choose to go high or low, with draw or fade, reduce or increase spin. For example, you can increase the power and length of your shot by moving them closer to the clubface. The system itself is very user-friendly and weights can be moved along easily and quickly so that you can benefit from the versatility of the club at all time.

The club is available with a 61-gram stiff shaft or a regular 59-gram shaft, both measuring 45” and based on design combining Mitsubishi Rayon and Mizuno Fubuki Graphite shafts.

We particularly liked how Mizuno successfully managed to combine state-of-the art technology with a sleek, classic look. Indeed, many golf manufacturers have improved the technical qualities of their drivers while completely neglecting research in aesthetics. As a consequence, the result is often great drivers with non-complementary aesthetics. Some may think this is superficial, but we think that the look of a driver plays an important part in triggering confidence and desire to play and Mizuno’s club registers highly in terms of visual appeal.

Another strong point of the MP-630 Fast Track Driver is its very good balance which, combined with the Fubuki Graphite shaft, provides incredible feel, both at address and at the moment you hit the ball. The sense of control at the moment of impact is one of the best we have ever experienced. Some of our testers who are not usually very big hitters we able to launch the ball at rocket speed and reach beyond their average drive distance.

We also found it extremely easy to change the ball flight setting by sliding the two weights in different positions without having to remove them. Overall all the changes were efficient and made noticeable – although subtle – changes on the ball trajectory. This means that this club is made for those who want to slightly tweak the ball flight rather than change their swing or fix major defects in their game. Naturally, it takes some time to find the settings that will optimise you ball trajectory but once you’ve found them; your game will undoubtedly improve a lot.

Overall, the Mizuno MP-630 Fast Track Driver is an excellent club that combines great looks with great performance. It will allow you to hit the ball further than the majority of drivers on the market. The great feel throughout the swing movement will increase your confidence level as well as the consistency of your game while the moveable weight system will allow you to be versatile and optimise the ball flight. This club is a great compromise between user-friendly drivers and unforgiving professional ones and we predict that it will be one of this year’s bestselling products.
