Review: TaylorMade R11 Driver

Written by  Kevin Mullaney on Tuesday, 08 March 2011

We have finally got our hands on the exciting new R11 driver which is taking driver technology and adjustability to new heights. The days of the pricy custom club may well be numbered.

The first thing you notice about the R11 even before swinging it is the fierce looking aerodynamic shape.

This allows air to flow smoothly over the crown, which reduces the drag that has started to limit the acceleration of modern drivers.

This fractional yet vital design change adds valuable speed to your swing and distance to the ball (6 yards more than the R9 say TM).

For a driver of its size you can approach the ball with more confidence when you need to swing hard and fast. However there is little drama or theatrics when you strike the ball; we noted a relatively muted and damp feel as the ball sprung off the face.

Despite this the results speak for themselves and the R11 consistently out performs any other driver in its class.

To reach your full potential with this club there are three adjustments that can be made to suit your swing.

Flight Control Technology (FCT) allows you to adjust the loft of the driver through four half degree incremental settings.

This means you have greater control over trajectory, spin, roll and added ball penetration on windy days. This adjustment is performed simply by unscrewing the sleeve on the shaft to detach the head.

Then align the sleeve against clearly marked positions and screw back in with the wrench tool. These adjustments are surprisingly simple once you get the hang of it. This setting also allows you to change how you tee the ball and helps you to achieve maximum distance.

The real innovation with the R11 is the adjustable side plate (ASP) which can open or close the face angle independent of loft by one degree either way.

This is a brand new feature that is adjusted by simply unscrewing the side plate. This feature is ideal for any player who has an identifiable hook or slice.

I have found by closing the face by half a degree I was able to correct my right sided habits but on occasion it overcompensates and pushes the ball left.

Be very careful when playing with this setting and if you push the ball in both directions in the same round be sure to leave the R11 in natural! The final adjustment can also help straighten up swings or promote a power draw.

With movable weight technology (MWT) you can swap two weights between the heel and the toe of the club for desired effect. In the neutral setting the heavier 10g weight is placed closer to the body on the heel to stabilise the club through contact for greater consistency and accuracy.

When the weights are swapped, and the heavier 10g is on the toe of the club, it promotes a draw by fractionally delaying contact to create spin.

Taylor Made claim this can create up to 100 yards of movement and 1,000 RPM of spin, which doesn’t sound like a good thing but is less dramatic in practice.

Again this feature is a real confidence booster and is simple to use. If you are unfamiliar with adjustable clubs and you are thinking of upgrading, it’s important to swing the club brand new, in neutral before you do anything with the settings.

Having been a fan of Taylor Made drivers for years there is no doubt that the R11 is the best they’ve produced – a real step up from the brilliant R9. With a stiff shaft the club sings; it is amazingly forgiving and consistent.

I would be happy to buy this driver even without the adjustable technology. With the adjustability, it’s an absolute must have.

Once you combine the adaptable technology with what is an amazing driver in its own right then you get great value and a club that will grow and change with your game. The R11 certainly does signal the death of conventional custom clubs and ushers in a truly new era of choice for golfers of all standards!
