Product Review: TaylorMade R9 Driver

Written by  Heather McKay on Wednesday, 02 February 2011

The TaylorMade R9 driver has proven to be a really popular choice amongst golfers of all abilities and this is probably because it is so easy to adjust to suit any swing. In fact, this club offers you 24 drivers in one because of the many settings you can change to alter the trajectory of the ball. TaylorMade claim that this driver will allow you to change the side-by-side flight by up to 75 yards just by changing the centre of gravity  and altering loft, face angle and lie angle, which is a very bold claim indeed. We've taken a closer look to see whether this club lives up to the hype.

There are four main technologies that are packed into this driver that make it so unique on the market. The Flight Control Technology is what enables any player to fine-tune the loft, lie angle and face angle, and it works through the use of a sleeve over the tip of the shaft which can be rotated into various positions, which in turn loosens or tightens the bolt which connects the sleeve and shaft to the clubhead. The result is that the characteristics and precise position of the head can be adjusted easily.

The other main feature which allows maximum customisability is the Moveable Weight Technology, which, although nothing new for TaylorMade, does add a lot to this driver. It enables you to change the weighting in the clubhead, altering the exact position of the centre of gravity, which will help to maximise distance through each swing. Three weight ports allow this to happen - one in the toe, heel and centre - allowing you to weight the club exactly how you wish.

Inverted Cone Technology and Ultra-Thin Wall Technologies feature in the R9 too, both working to save some weight in the club, allow MWT and FCT to perform as well as possible, and maximise the COR zone to ensure that each swing allows for optimum performance.

The first thing we wanted to do when we received this club for testing was to try out the settings. We were pleased to find that it was remarkably easy to do so; the driver comes with a wrench to adjust the shaft, and clever positioning of the bolt means that you won't easily lose it when you're playing around with the settings.

It took a while to figure everything out and decide on what would suit each swing best, so you would need to be prepared to spend some time reading up on how each alteration would affect ball trajectory. But, once we were happy with the setup, we all agreed that our game was vastly improved as a result.

Shot shaping was relatively simple with the combination of FCT and MWT, so any golfer would instantly have far more influence over their swing without having to drastically alter their technique. This may cause some controversy: there will always be the purists who feel that, in order to improve your game, you should simply seek tuition and learn from the best - but if there is a driver out there that can bend to suit your swing, then why not use it?

Another big advantage to this driver's customisability is the length of life it should have in your kit - it's not a cheap club, but the fact that you can change so much about it means that it will grow with you, and hopefully last you for many years as a result. As your technique changes slightly, grows and develops, you can ensure that the R9 will too, so whether you do end up taking lessons and learning different techniques or not, this club will always remain versatile and ready to be optimised for your particular swing.

What the Web is Saying

"It has taken TaylorMade five years to produce an R9 driver - now we know why. There is a level of adjustability here that should help any golfer find a set-up that works. Better ball-strikers will also enjoy the trajectory control and shot-shaping on offer from this 420cc head." - golf-monthly.co.uk

"This is a club that rewards the better player. Those with a high swing speed and consistent swing will definitely be fans which also explains why this is the most commonly played TaylorMade driver model on the major tours. All in all this is a very good club and the legions of TaylorMade fans will be happy with this latest hit." - golfwrx.com

"Bottom line, the TaylorMade R9 driver is a great golf club that provides unprecedented amount of adjustability and customization quickly, and without the support of a tour van. If your a low-mid handicap golfer, who likes to fine tune their golf club, and wants a tour caliber flight trajectory, then checkout the R9 driver." - sandbox8.com

"We were hugely impressed with the R9 driver. We have enjoyed watching the growing popularity of adjustable drivers and we believe that the TaylorMade R9 is the best yet." - golfalot.com
