Review: Callaway Ladies Diablo Octane Driver

Written by  James Cornish on Monday, 30 May 2011

Fueled by Forged Composite, an innovative new material that is stronger and lighter than titanium, the Callaway Ladies Diablo Black Octane driver is the newest edition to the Diablo range. We review it to find out just how good it really is.

With a lighter club head it has a performance advantage over all-titanium drivers. The crown has 10 million carbon fibers that form 33% of the club head allowing for a reduced head weight.

The Hyperbolic Face Technology uses a chemical reduction technique to eliminate excess material. This achieves precision thickness control and creates enhanced accuracy and high ball speeds for added distance, even on mishits. By creating a larger effective hitting area, you will attain far more forgiveness with this club.

We were very impressed by this driver - in looks, feel, and performance. The noise it makes on impact with the ball is very satisfying. With many composite drivers you get a rather muffled sound but the Diablo Black Octane has a more solid resonance.

The driver looked good at address and every hit seemed effortless, with excellent results each time. The ball had a really high line of flight and achieved impressive distances.

According to Callaway, the lighter club head of the Diablo Black Octane driver will give you an average of eight extra yards over the Diablo Edge driver - on one shot I even managed an extra fifteen yards. However, on the day we played conditions were quite calm, but there is no reason why you would not achieve the additional yards I would when playing in more adverse conditions.

The club was light and reacted well, giving improved precision, even on shots that were slightly misaligned. This performance is enhanced by the longer Project X graphite shaft. The shaft responded well to my swing and produced excellent golf ball speeds from the tee. The only downside to the longer shaft is that accuracy can sometimes suffer as a consequence.

If you are looking for a new driver, we would definitely recommend the Ladies Diablo Black Octane. Not only does it perform well, but it looks good too, with a sleek black finish that is exclusive to the European market. The combination of the Project X shaft and lighter club head has convinced us that, if you're looking to improve your game, this driver would be an excellent choice for women players of any ability.
