Available in draw and neutral, we took the neutral model out for a spin on the course.
What immediately struck us was the weight of the club. Although not as light as the Superfast 2.0 that is 280 grams, weighing in at 315.3 grams Callaway's driver feels very svelte indeed.
The head has been carefully designed to this end: the forged composite material allows weight to be distributed to exacting standards, increasing the MOI (Moment of Inertia – the club resistance to twisting when the ball is struck) and forgiveness while keeping the overall weight as low as possible.
And all this means faster swing speeds which translates to greater distance, especially when combined with an aerodynamic design and a head with a low profile, reducing drag.
The feeling on impact was satisfying, although the sound felt a little muted compared to some other drivers. This is something to consider if you prefer a more responsive club. It does feel very solid, though.
With any golf club there is always a trade-off to be made between distance and control. Callaway's Diablo Octane driver was all about generating distance, often at the expense of being able to shape shots; the RAZR Hawk almost feels as though it has been designed to complement this earlier offering completely. Control and workability are the order of the day here, and while this does perhaps mean making a sacrifice to distance, we certainly felt that the greater accuracy achieved is worth it.
Make no mistake, though: The Callaway RAZR Hawk is an impressive driver which will have you hitting consistently long, accurate shots. At the end of the day, it all comes down to your game and whether you are looking for a driver to help you get that extra couple of yards, or a driver that will also provide consistency and workability.
The RAZR Hawk is certainly the latter and it does its job very well indeed. Hitting on centre produced some fantastic, long drives, but even when the ball was hit slightly off the heel or toe we were impressed with the results. And perhaps this is where the club really excels. It makes a fantastic choice for mid to high handicap golfers for this very reason: it's incredibly forgiving, allowing those with less experience the opportunity to really improve their game.
