Review: Callaway FT-9 Driver

Written by  Neal Granville on Tuesday, 26 April 2011

If you want a driver with a bit more workability to shape shots then the Callaway Golf FT-9 Driver delivers, and we're reviewing it here.

When shopping for a driver, what you really need to look for is something that offers distance and control to really make that first shot count.

But the more creative golfer might want a bit more flexibility to shape their shots and it is on this front that the Callaway Golf FT-9 driver performs. Whether you want to fade your shot or draw it, this driver offers the versatility, distance and control required for maximum creativity from the tee.

The clubhead has a slightly flashy design that might divide Callaway fans but this is a minor issue easily be ignored once performance is taken into account.

While the influence of Callaway's previous FT models is evident in the clubhead, it does have a slightly longer and deeper design. It also offers features to enhance your performance, such as the Hyperbolic Face Technology - where the club face has been chemically treated ensuring precision thickness across the face and a larger sweet spot for more consistent driving.

The face design works in conjunction with the Fusion Technology (using the right materials into the correct places to optimize performance) to give you a long drive that won't sacrifice accuracy.

This is evident with the 'web weighting', which has been incorporated into the design on the clubhead. The weights allow you to manually change the club's centre of gravity in order to achieve customisable control for shaping your shots.

Players can choose from the draw setting, which is useful if you want to reduce slicing, or neutral, which allows for maximum workability.

The Callaway FT-9 has a titanium clubface with a slightly open face angle, which helps you achieve the trajectory and ball flight you need to shape that shot to your advantage. It hits the ball with a satisfyingly solid feel.

Callaway have produced the perfect club for teeing off and one that should provide players of all abilities with a strong start to their game. It is particularly useful for long shots and will come in handy when a more complex drive is required. Pure shots lie completely within its capabilities but you also have the resources to draw and pull your shots when required. The same technology can be used to rescue wide shots and prevent slicing.

With a good lie the driver is suitable for use on the fairway and this all adds up to a versatile that club that can get you very far. Speed, distance, forgiveness and versatility have all been wrapped up in one tidy package to help you create the shots you want.

It is not always easy finding a good driver that offers both playability and distance but with the FT-9 Driver, Callaway have evidently hit the nail on the head.

What the Web is Saying

"The composite crown produces a sound unlike that of all-titanium drivers; lower, quieter, not so explosive. That might not be to everyone's taste but it would be wrong to assume the FT-9 isn't long." - golfmagic.com

"Composite heads often provide a mixed reaction, but the performance and looks of the FT-9 should make it an all-round winner. It seemed to offer more forgiveness than its predecessor, the FT-5, and at impact it sounded great." - golf-monthly.co.uk

"The Callaway FT-9 driver is one of the best composite material drivers we have tested. Unlike most other composite drivers, the sound was very solid and the flight of the ball was excellent." - golfalot.com
