Review: Cobra S2 Offset Driver

Written by  Neal Granville on Saturday, 09 April 2011

If you have a mid to high handicap and a tendency to slice your shots then the busy people at Cobra have come up with the perfect club for you.

Based on the Cobra S2 Driver, this model retains the exceptional performance of this club but has been modified with the kind of technological insight Cobra are famous for.

The result offers a maximum draw-bias, which means less slicing, more forgiveness, and a high-launch ball flight that will cover greater distance.

This 460cc driver is made from 6-4 titanium and comes with the Cobra Fit-On Max 65 shaft. It utilises Fujikura's Swing-Sync Design Technology, resulting in maximum flexural rigidity, just right for delivering a satisfying launch angle and spin on impact.

The shaft is available in Regular, Stiff and Lite, each offering varying degrees of flexibility to suit your style. Players can also choose from either a Cobra or Golf Pride grip.

The clubhead incorporates 9 Point Face Technology for more forgiveness and has been designed with a thin face for a higher ball speed, which will achieve longer drives without losing accuracy.

As the name suggests, it has an encouraging offset design with a slightly altered centre of gravity for more of a draw-bias that will cut down on slicing.

Even your off-centre strikes will be more direct, saving you from the embarrassment of a dreaded banana ball and giving you a longer, straighter drive. The driver can be bought with a loft of either 10.5º or 11.5º for right-handed players, but a left-handed driver is also available with a 10.5º loft.

Playing with the S2 Offset Driver makes it abundantly clear that this is very much intended for the less advanced player and those more experienced will probably feel more suited to the standard version of the S2.

There is also a slight heaviness to the stock shaft, which can be distracting, although this may go unnoticed by the more casual golfer to whom it is really marketed. However, for all intents, the S2 Offset delivers.

Designed for game-improvement, the S2 Offset helps compensate for wide shots with maximum forgiveness to keep your drives straight. You'll soon find yourself hitting the ball further with the accuracy you need and slicing will cease to be a problem.

If you have a higher handicap then you'll be very satisfied with the S2 Offset's performance.

Even with a slower swing speed a fair amount of distance can be achieved thanks to the repositioning of the centre of gravity, and the famous 9 Point Face Technology works in conjunction with the thin club face to make your shots fly a lot straighter with a satisfying sound.

You'll definitely feel more control behind the ball, allowing for a much more confident game.

This is the perfect driver for those looking to hone their skills and step up their game. However, more advanced players should go for the standard model with its Adjustable Flight Technology, a feature sadly absent here. But such criticism is unfair; the S2 Offset achieves exactly what it sets out to do.

What the Web is Saying

"We found the feel and sound at impact to be terrific and were impressed with how easy it was to get the ball travelling long and straight with a pleasing consistency. We really think this Cobra S2 Offset will be a winner with the mid handicappers." - golfalot.com

"High-flying shots, on occasion, land softly and might curtail roll; lacks the adjustable face angle option in S2 driver." - golf.com
