Review: Cobra White S3 Driver

Written by  Tim Pettifer on Monday, 30 May 2011

Cobra Golf aren't just producing great drivers but creating an ordering frenzy with the release of their second limited edition driver. The white S3 will soon be in the hands of club players around the country, but is it a fairway splitter or fashion statement? We review the Cobra Limited Edition White S3 driver here.

The new white S3, more commonly available in black, certainly makes a bold statement on the course but that all depends on what statement you're trying to make. You could spot the white head and grip from a mile away and that's fine for players like Ian Poulter who are unashamedly known for being over the top, but I'm not sure how it sits with your average golfer.

The serial number on the head points out the exclusivity of the club and that's great if you are going to hide this club away as a collector's item but it seems that the face and head cover won't stay white for long.

However, all of the aesthetic concerns disappear once you start swinging the club. Like all Cobra drivers the S3 sounds great as you pound huge drives straight down the middle. The face was designed around the hitting patterns of mid to high handicappers making it incredibly forgiving.

The face is taller and features a reinforced elliptical sweet spot that is 30% larger than previous models, capturing the most common low heel and high toe hitting patterns. The results speak for themselves as Cobra's vast elliptical face indiscriminately straightens and lengthens shots of varying quality.

The S3's face has also been strengthened allowing for weight to be redistributed for a lower centre of gravity which makes for a higher, more penetrating ball flight.

The introduction of Adjustable Face Technology provides you with three face settings from neutral to 1.5° open or closed. This is intended to correct slices for a longer drawing ball flight but for me there needs to more incremental settings, as with the Taylor Made R11 driver, rather than just three bold and often overcompensating options.

I would recommend the standard black S3 and advise leaving it in the neutral setting. If you are looking for an adjustable club then you may want to consider looking for one that is purpose built. The smart face design makes for a really forgiving, long hitting driver that doesn't require additional flamboyancy.
