Review: Mizuno Golf MX700 Driver

Written by  Tim Pettifer on Saturday, 14 May 2011

Can the highly anticipated Mizuno MX-700 driver split views on the fairway? We review it here.

Mizuno has at times been underestimated by the golfing community and has fallen behind the more established brands. However, following their first foray into the improvement market the brand has released a driver to aid golfers of all abilities and to make waves among the big boys.

Having become a fan of Mizuno's recent releases you can see they are departing from their traditional blue branding and making a statement with a bold yet beautiful yellow on black look.

At address the club feels great and is easy to align, inspiring confidence before you strike the ball. Unlike many improvement drivers, which lie closed, the MX-700 sits perfectly square and has a nice wide face with the MX logo looking up at you for ease of alignment.

The MX-700 may be the same size as most modern drivers, 460cc, but doesn't seem as bulky. Yet there is enough meat behind the ball to inspire you to swing hard. This club thrashes the ball off the tee and achieves distances as far or if not further than any of its rivals.

The added ball speed and distance is achieved through the introduction of an aligned grain structure running through the face which is built for stability as much as distance.

The face itself has been designed to be incredibly forgiving and distance can be achieved even with off centre hits. The Hot Metal Titanium plasma welded head has saved weight, allowing Mizuno to broaden the face and create a vast, forgiving sweet spot that is hard to miss.

These weight savings have been redistributed to create a low centre of gravity that produces a low spinning, high penetrating ball flight, allowing anyone to get the ball airborne.

A reinforced hull has replaced the damp sound you came to expect from its predecessor the MX-500 with a dramatic crescendo that puts a smile on your face every time. These improvements have reduced club vibration, giving you feedback and a solid feel every time.

No longer can Mizuno be considered a second-class citizen. Coupled with their re-branding and the release of the highly successful JPX-800 irons they will be a major contender in the coming years.

The MX-700 ticks all the boxes and produces accessible distance for golfers of all handicaps. This club can be used to devastating effect by the highest handicappers right down to Luke Donald who has utilized Mizuno's know how to become one of golf's elite.
