Review: Nike Golf Machspeed STR8-Fit Driver

Written by  David Colyer on Wednesday, 04 May 2011

Considered to be one of the best drivers on the market it is now our chance to review the Nike Golf Machspeed STR-8 Round Head Driver.

You may take 50% of your shots on the greens but if you are not driving over 250 yards you could well be losing out.

Drivers have got bigger and bigger and are now up to 460cc in size. As the club heads have got larger drag has become more of a factor, slowing down the club and reducing delivery speed. But with computer aided design in aerodynamics and testing in wind tunnels this is being compensated for and manufacturers spend millions researching and developing their clubs.

The aerodynamically engineered Machspeed Black STR8-Fit Round Head club has been designed to produce maximum golf swing speed by reducing the drag, allowing a swifter swing with less effort. The effect is smooth air flow around the club head as well as having a tapered heel and 'sole diffuser' to keep air flow close to the surface. Whatever Nike want to call it, this driver delivers an immense amount of power on impact which goes straight into pushing the ball further down the fairway for what would seem like less effort.

Another key feature of the Machspeed Black Driver Round is Nike's STR8-Fit technology, which allows you to adjust the club face angle - delivering eight different positions in one degree increments. This may seem too complex for the average handicapped player but the adjustability does allow you to set the ideal face angle for your swing and helps to correct those hooks and slices.

While the club is available with a square head offering more forgiveness we took out the round head, allowing more control for slightly more adept players. The 460cc round head has a sleek black profile and is easy to swing which would suit a broad range of handicaps.

You can hit the ball further with other drivers but this one is very easy to use, feels great and is probably one of the most consistent drivers on the market when set up properly - in the neutral setting I found the face slightly closed. It would certainly do a good job in keeping people out of trouble.

Coming with a 10.5 degree angle and a graphite shaft there is no doubt that this club looks great, glides through the air with its advanced aerodynamics and feels great too when you strike the ball.

What the Web is Saying

"From set-up, to sound, to performance, this is the best adjustable-head driver yet." - worldgolf.com

"Using the Str8-Fit technology, this product was easy to flight, however the Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki shaft was very 'torquey', suggesting that it may not suit certain swing speeds." - golf-monthly.co.uk
