Review: Taylor Made R9 460 TP Driver

Written by  Hannah Brown on Saturday, 09 April 2011

The TaylorMade R9 460 TP Driver is a great addition to your golf bag. With modern lines perfectly combined with a more traditional aesthetic, it's a great looking driver - but more than just a pretty face, it will have you making great drives time and time again.

The R9 460 TP features a 65 gram Fujikura Motore F1 shaft, which is designed to have lower torque and be slightly stiffer than the shaft of the similar R9 460 driver. The club head is identical, however, meaning that you get all of the features that you might expect: Flight Control Technology, Inverted Cone Technology and a low, deep centre of gravity for an impressive amount of forgiveness on each shot.

The built-in Flight Control Technology enables you to adjust each shot with precision, for up to 40 yards in trajectory to the left or the right. This means that you can really be accurate with your game, and have a level of control which is impossible with many other drivers on the market. The face angle, effective loft and lie angle are all easy to modify with the eight different head positions - excellent for any perfectionists who really want to achieve their optimum performance.

You can get much greater ball speeds with the Inverted Cone Technology, so even on mis-hits right across the face you can be sure of a greater distance than you might be used to. This technology was designed to expand the COR zone of the driver, through the inverted cone which is CNC-milled straight into the back of the face. Consequently, the maximum amount of energy is transferred from your swing through to the golf ball. This, combined with the deeper centre of gravity, means that this is a really forgiving driver which can offer a high launch angle.

We loved this offering from TaylorMade: the stiffer Motore F1 shaft is a fantastic upgrade to the previous R9 460, providing a really nice feel and weight to the club. This means that, at address, we felt really confident that our swing would yield a great shot - and, more often than not, it did. With mis-hits turning out surprisingly long and straight, and good hits achieving a really impressive distance, we are confident that this driver would really help to improve any golfer's game. It just looks great, too, adding to the pleasure of holding it on the course and lining up for a shot.

After a few holes, we decided that it's definitely fair to say that anyone would really benefit from the consistency that the R9 460 TP can offer. Each shot was very straight and long, allowing for a much greater level of accuracy - and, when combined with all of the adjustments that you can make to really perfect your game, this driver really is a force to be reckoned with.

The forgiveness and low centre of gravity mean that even beginners should see their game improve quickly with this driver. But, for those who have more experience, the Flight Control Technology will allow for unprecedented levels of control and precision.

What the Web is Saying

"One of the top overall performers; the adjustable head makes it fun and easy to try to find a new, better ball flight; springy, energetic face, an efficient transfer of power into the ball every time; pretty consistent forgiveness; the less effort you put into it, the more it delivers; masks potential distance loss on heel or toe strikes; penetrating ball flight." - golf.com
