Review: Yonex Nanospeed i Driver

Written by  Will O'Doherty on Saturday, 14 May 2011

Yonex released this club to a chorus of praise in late 2007 when it transferred technological advances to obvious benefit on the course. Three years later other clubs have caught up and we were interested to see whether the initial excitement we felt for this club would remain. We review the Yonex Nanospeed i Driver here.

Yonex developed their Nanospeed 70+ shaft in house to offer greater strength higher up and a controlled snap lower down. When they bolted their extremely lightweight, pentagonal shaped clubhead on the end, the overall package ensured fantastic speed through the ball.

The difference between this driver and most of its contemporaries was very noticeable and it still feels great today. Knowing you can generate such good speeds with a normal swing does a lot for confidence on the tee and not having to force a shot means you keep in line, and accuracy remains consistent.

While it might be entirely superficial, the club makes a beautiful sound when you catch the ball right, not that you need to see that this it is a club designed for distance. The pentagonal clubhead might give the Nanospeed i looks only its owner could love but it cuts through the air with ease. On top of that, the low centre of gravity on the very light head helps achieve an excellent angle of release, and a long penetrative flight that meant our four and five irons had a quiet day.

The clubhead looks every inch its 460cc size so while it has a big sweetspot for the higher handicapper, it might not be ideal for anyone who really gets out of line swinging bigger heads.

We found the driver accentuated a draw just a touch, while hooks were also accentuated – though that is certainly not a problem unique to the Nanospeed i. It is actually a very forgiving club that promises great length and accuracy and will not punish miss hits.

Lower handicappers might be disappointed by a lack of workability, but we really felt that the shaft helped to align a clubhead that was nicely weighted and blessed with a large sweetspot. We were consistently long and straight, full of confidence on the tee, and within striking distance of the green on our second.
