Product Review: Nike VR TW Blade Irons

Written by  Paul Gibbons on Tuesday, 01 February 2011

These spectacular Nike irons have been designed with direct feedback and input from Tiger Woods himself, so you can be sure that they offer nothing less than pro quality. For golfers with a low handicap, they will offer precision, accuracy and unbeatable performance.

There are many small differences between these clubs and many other irons on the market and these are all slight alterations on a winning formula which ensures that they are at the top of the pile. The toe is a little squarer than you might expect, which aids alignment, and although they have the more traditional muscleback design, the club head itself is a fraction larger than many other blades.

Forged from 1025 carbon steel and with a CNC milled face, these blades promise fantastic feel as well as excellent consistency, thanks to precise uniform ball compression. The materials of choice for pro golfers, unbeatably accurate tolerances have been crafted to ensure that you remain at the top of your game. In addition, the tour Velvet Cord grip means that you'll enjoy maximum playability whatever the weather, thanks to this exclusive material that affords golfers a comfortable, firm grip.

Tiger Woods' influence can be felt in the positioning of the centre of gravity, which is very high indeed - apparently in the position that he prefers in his blades. The high muscleback and long hosel combine to weight the club in such a way as to offer ultimate control for the more confident, accomplished golfer - precision and skill are a must with these clubs, due also in part to their narrow sole and rolled leading edge.

When it comes to practice, there is no doubt that these blades feel excellent: strong, soft and incredibly workable, these really do have it all. Of course, being blades, there is far less forgiveness than you would expect with cavity back irons, due to a much smaller sweet spot - you really do need some considerable experience to tame these blades, but skilled golfers with lower handicaps will see their game improve drastically by investing in a set of these irons. There is no doubt that any good striker will totally fall in love with these; some serious distance can be gained when you hit the ball just right, and once you've got the hang of it you'll find the distance control fairly simple.

We found that they really did demand a lot of the player - but what is gained from putting the practice in with these irons is definitely worth it. Whilst your best swing will get you an impressive distance, we also found these blades to cover the whole spectrum with relative ease through mid-trajectory shots, high soaring shots and three-quarter punches. We were also pleased to find that you can still maintain a high level of control with enough spin to bend the path of the ball to your will, despite the high centre of gravity in each blade.

Don't expect these clubs to offer you any compromises. But, if you put your experience and skill behind them, they will serve you very well indeed with excellent control, distance and accuracy. I was very impressed with the overall feel, and especially the feedback from the blades - an important feature that you will miss with most cavity backs. What you miss in forgiveness you will gain in distance control, which is good news for the more advanced golfer who is looking to raise their game.
