Review: Cleveland Classic Putter

Written by  Tim Pettifer on Wednesday, 11 May 2011

Cleveland Golf has revamped their traditional putters for the modern era. Bringing the quality and durability we have come to expect to a new generation of putters inspired by the looks of old favourites.

The new line of 'classic' putters are built for performance and carry with them many of the improved features of modern putters but at a fraction of the cost. I am seeing if this new series of putters really delivers value by fusing old looks with new tricks.

Firstly there is a huge amount of choice in terms of design and setup with this series of putters so there is something for everyone straight off the rack. You have a choice between T-Frame Mallet putters, double bend, blades and many more. They also come in a choice of metal black, platinum or bronze which are made form 17-4 stainless steel, hand polished with a satin finish for reduced glare and increased durability.

All of the 'classic' series have CNC milled (computer milling) faces which produce the desired 'soft yet solid' feel expected of Cleveland putters. At address the putter has a nice bold line which easily helps with alignment and allows you to set up and swing through the putt with confidence.

The face does feel responsive and after a little practice you can quickly settle into your stride. The putter is set up with a 70 degree lie angle and a 3 degree loft which actually helps the ball slightly leap over any surrounding depressions and almost immediately produces the necessary forward roll.

I found this loft also made longer putting off the green even easier as the ball does slightly pop up before running true.

Besides doing the basics well these classic looking putters also have the weighting features you would expect from an expensive modern club. All of the classics have a heel-toe weighting system which stabilises the putter for a cleaner stroke and reduces the potential twisting that occurs in off-centre impacts.

The results are remarkable and I found that the classic putters perform pretty much as well as any putter out there. There are a couple of drawbacks as the traditional red grip is a little hard but this can be easily and cheaply upgraded. These putters aren't the heavies, at only 340g, but the weighting technology does compensate to level out uneven strokes.

The most amazing thing about these putters is that they cost under £50! For this price the Cleveland Classic Putters have to be the best value for money of any club around. The amount of choice and exquisite design allow for a beautiful 'no-frills' putter that can be used by anyone - as demonstrated by pros like Jerry Kelly who used a classic putter straight of the rack to win on the PGA tour.

Good looks never go out of fashion and the improvements made to the classic series really do make them giant killers.
